why don't you just go by your own name if it's only you?

i like Sill

it's unique.... we know what it is but it still sounds like a fabricated word.

if your goin for flower names, how about "Pansy", or "Poinsietta"

hey Ix3,

hate to say it, I'm not overwhelmed by any of these. I suppose Sill is the weirdest and therefore the most creative name so I'll vote for that.

even if it isn't a band?

Yes. The purpose of a band name is to attract attention and get people to come hear you even though they have no idea who you are. If you have a big reputation based on your name, thats one thing....but if you are an unknown, just going by your name is boring and unlikely to attract attention. Come up with a clever creative name, then people will show to see how creative you really are...You just better not suck.

Also, if you use a name, and you decide to add other people later, you dont have to change names, or risk pissing off your band mates by still just going by your name. Name changes undo any goodwill you have built up.

I like to come up with names that people think they have heard before. My band name is like that. When we first started gigging(in its previous incarnation), people told us that they had heard of us before and heard we were pretty good. Course we could back it up, but it landed us a headlining position at a festival as our first gig. They even used our name on the radio.

good logic Bdgr. I can't imagine working with an artist so pretentious to name an entire band after himself.

My question is, what if you have a band name for one person? I know if I show up to see the Fantastic Freakazoid Party and it's a dude with a synth onstage, I'm gonna be pissed. :D

Well, like I said, you have to be able to back it up once you get them in the door.

Say you show up to see Fantastic Freakazoid Party, you see one guy up there with some electronic gear, and you think, what the hell is this? You are at least going to hang around to hear him, and make fun of him. Then he starts playing and really blows you away, your not going to remember its just one guy.

The hard part is getting them in the door. So many talented musicians never get heard. But then again, if you go to hear the Fantastic Freakazoid Party, and its a guy with a synth that sounds like Ross on Friends, well he's screwed. At least he can change his name when he gets better without a court order.

So again, be sure you can back it up.

Here is an instance where I think you should use your own name. If you are just being backed up by a Drum machine.. just use your name. When other people join you they can have a band name...

For instance Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs.. Billy tours by himself he just performs with different bands.. he performs with the Sunbury Aztecs and peforms with 'house bands'.

Make a name for yourself then get a band behind you...

Just another suggestion...

Hey Stone,
You wouldn't play behind Dave Matthews?

Just wonderin'

A good Example

Speaking of synth's and a one man show...One very good example would be Nine Inch Nails. Nine Inch Nails originated with one man...Trent Reznor...when he started gigging he added bodies (including a spawning Marylin Manson).
Back then, one would be more inclined to purchase an album by Nine Inch Nails rather then Trent Reznor (although his name does sound kinda cool).
I agree with Bdgr's reasoning behind band names vs. a solo artist's true/stage name. I myself have considered using a band name instead of my true name for that reason. Only catch is, you have to be creative enough to make up a name that someone else hasn't used (which is much more difficult than it sounds). For the sake of credit though, if you wrote the song lyrics, the music and you are the lead vocalist and you use your name, then I am sure you might have a few musicians out there that might wanna tag along. They've gotta eat too.

Speaking of which....

We're all old gits (42, 43 and the baby female singer is 37) and our guitarist has written this superb song called Still Got Time.

Now there's a double entendre laden name for our band...
