Hello all.....

please take a listen to "Loading Dock" It's our band's first attempt at actually putting some demos to tape..... It's raw, recorded on a 4 track with no effects on vocals or drums....

Were just starting off, so things are very very rough at certain points.....

Any criticism/feedback/advice would be GREATLY appreciated...

enjoy! and thank you in advance!

You have a band, you have nice photos on MP3.com, you have decent songs and players, you a more than a base knowlege of recording: Why are you laying your tunes on a 4 track without the use of any effects?

Theron.

truthfully, we can't afford them.... I would love to eventually get some effects on this and 'master' it. We just got a Yamaha MD8 to expand our possiblities. Money seems to trickle in at a snails pace. We have a friend who is very talented on audio and helps us out a great deal, but effects equipment is hard to come by right now..... I guess I'm looking to see what COULD be done with our tracks in terms of effects...

You can capture live drums and piggy back tracks that good on a 4 track, plus get all the others in and mix it sufficiently without any onboard effects? I'm sending you huge compliments on your use of said equipment but, can't fathom (in my limited ignorant head) why you are stumped/brickwalled when it comes to effects. I won't risk giving bad or misleading advice but, I'm sure you've something at your disposal via the comp or otherwise that is free.

Props to your use of next to nothing. Wish I was as resorcefull.

Theron.

theron, thanks for the props....

I'm just curious as to what can be done to make it it's best technically speaking.... would eq'ing help? would compression work for the bass, and not the vocals? etc... critical feedback is what I'm looking for as well.

we used an old 4 channel shure mixer to pre-mix the drums down to one track, without bouncing.... This recording was basically a 'live' in the studio take. Only the bass and vocals were re-recorded for fix ups.

what four track are you using, out of curiosity? Also, if your guitarist has like guitar pedals, those can always be used as effects as well for just about anything. Don't be afraid to experiment. Sounds good.

I think it sounds pretty nice all things considered...

It was done on 4 track digital? Or analog?

thanks for the replies....

we're using a Tascam 414mkII analog 4 track. the only effect is a danelectro dan-echo pedal for the guitar, which weirdly enough was used to add a bit of echo to parts of the vocal.

Abbott--- you're right about experimenting...I've been starting to do that lately with recording and it's amazing what some things like pedals and a tweak of a knob or two can produce....

thanks again for the input!
