Ballsy Compressor for pumping bass tracks?

Yes, it certainly does. Which is proof you don't have to spend thousands to get a good track. That's a nice philosophy!

Yeah, yeah, yeah... I know.

BTW, I meant to say that we have an ART Dual MP, not a Tube MP (duh!), so the recording you heard was from a Dual MP, which I believe is just a rackmount 2-channel version of the Tube MP.

But you gotta admit, it still sounds darned good for a cheapo pre! :)

Oh, as far as compressors go, we have a RNC and it's stellar on bass and drum tracks.

I still can't seem to download that example for some reason. Odd. I never have trouble with NWR.

I do like the ART as a bass DI, though. Does a great job. I used to use 'em all the time until I picked up a couple 'a Groove Tubes Dittos -- which was only a marginal upgrade, if any.

Now that's something worth knowing.

dbx 119 is a cool choice to...

Listen to "Beached".

The bass signal chain is an ART tube mp, Altec 1650 EQ into a DBX 119 compressor. The art is pretty cranked, and the dbx 119 is on a "low to moderate squish" setting. The DBX 119 is 50 to 100$ compressor, and can be set to "stun setting" for bass! Very coloured and pumpy. Most of those random guitars in that mix are also going the the ART/dbx119. An ART tube mp is also on snare/kick, AND was a good choice for vocals on this song (no vocals in this mix though). Alot bang for a 49$ buck preamp and 50$ compressor!

I'm digging the kick drum in 'Beached', couldn't really make out the bass on my cheap computer speakers.

As far as a compressor goes, you really can't do wrong with a dbx 163x. It has one slider that gradually increases the compression. I also record bass through an ART Tube MP (upgraded tube) and the dbx 163x. It's always very even and punchy sounding. I got mine on ebay for $30.00!!!

I'll try to get some clips....

hey guys,

are we really talking about that little art pre? not the rackversions? i'm stunned, very nice bassdrum sound, the drummer isn't that tight though........

cheers

Thanks for the comments Alexi and DC, I also was pleased with the kick sound on that mix. Some more info on it: the drums I used are pictured and described in this thread:

https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=135456&highlight=drum+lineage

It's an inexpensive ($75) yamaha kick with a wood beater, together with a similarly priced snare. The kick was miced with a 35$ Electrovoice 664 (the 'ray gun' look alike mic!) that was running through the ART MP. Alexi, yea, we are talking about the lil' ART mp. I also sometimes use the rackmounted ART dual mp. It has better metering and power supply, but it is essentially 2 MP's in a rack - it sounds just the same. It's a usefull tool...

hi again,

i just did a search on google and saw that here are actually two Art MP'S (a blue one and a black one) which one were you using'

They're talking about the Dual MP... not the Tube MP although I don't know how they compare...

Im refering to both units. Dual MP = 2 ART MP's in a rack. No sonic difference.
