Windows crashed this weekend, some system files were corrupted and I wasn't able to save it. So for some of you who were giving me a hard time before....I have officially upgraded to Win98 SE!

I know, I know I'm an idiot, but basically both my sound card and video card manufacturers have gone out of business and the last official drivers available only support Win 95/98. There are some beta 3rd party drivers out for 2000/XP, but I didn't really want to try my luck.

Anyway, the gist of this post is to remind you about the value of 1)backing up your data and 2) having two hard drives.

The drives didn't die so I was able to copy most things over to the second drive before I reformatted and installed Win98 on the first. It pays to remember all of your DOS commands.

Now if I can just remember all of the crap I had installed....

You definitely should always back stuff up. My network backs up all the computers in my house at 2 in the morning automatically. I have two external 60 gig hard drives where it backs up to. Hard drives are real cheap right now.

I highly recomend a imageing program like Symantec (Norton) Ghost or Drive Image. Write an image of your system drive to 650 pieces every so often. I keep a second drive in my systems for several reasons, but partly just so I have a place to backup the C: drive too. Makes recovery from crashes very painless.
