Bad sound on my computer...what does it need?

Alright, here is my problem: I have a Compaq V5000 Presario notebook computer. I primarily use software, but from time to time I use it for recording things (I use Audacity for recording the said sound, and then process/mutilate it in FL, Reason or integrate the sample in one of many innumerable soft synths.) The things that bothers the hell out of me is the white noise I get in every mix. I've tried everything, but this stupid hissing is still there. I think it might be A) a pitifully inadequate soundcard or B) an internal electronics/ground problem. I'm not a genius, much less an electrician, so I was wanting to know if anyone here knows what's the likely problem and how to go about remedeing it without buying a whole new computer.

Thanks.

Most likely A: Soundcard.

Get a USB or Firewire interface with built-in preamps and you will be in much better shape.

You shouldn't be getting hiss from the soft synths, rather any externally recorded tracks.
If you can make a mix with oly one or the other to identify the source of the hiss.Chances are it's your soundcard or the sound source.

As always process of elimination is your best friend when it comes to diagnosing problems.

Any more or less precise recomondations for a laptop soundcard? I take it an external one would be smarter to get.

an external is your only option - really impossible to replace a laptop soundcard (chip).
