bad headphones

I was lookin' to save $20 and educate myself as to other headphones out there. I bought the AKG K141 cans and boy do they suck. The SONY MDR-7506 cans kick their ass up and down the street. They look great but these AKG cans are fucking painful to listen to! I think I'll save these for musicians I really hate that are too cheap to bring heir own phones to a venue that's not a studio set up for isolated recording.
That'll learn 'em!!!!!

What a way to get my money's worth! :)

How many times do I have to tell you to get a pair of Beyer 250's and toss those other phones for the head to your favorite deadhead colleague.

Bah, Humbug you say? Well, until you have put a pair of Beyer phoons on your lobes, well, you just haven't heard nice vibes.

There are a couple of sets of phones that sell for big dollars; however, the Beyer 250's are pretty darn good for around 131 pezutos.

I have five pair of phoons in my saloon for recording; however, I use the two pair of Beyer for the best in the air from my conrol chair and that's fair and not square...

Stop me, I can't take it any more.

How did I know a post on headphones by The Green Hornet was gonna involve the recommendation of Beyer 250's ;) Just yanking ya chain man!

Doc, I can understand wanting to try out different headphones... when I went up to Spider's studio a while back he had some AKG 240's and I had a quick listen to those and I didn't think they were that special considering they are the "industry standard" - I guess it all comes down to personal choice but I much prefer my 7506's - so with this in mind why try to fix something if ain't broke. Although saying that, it's not so bad buying a few different sets of headphones - I'd be concerned if you just went out and started buying different monitors just so you could see what they sound like, but with headphones it doesn't quite hit you in the hip pocket so much.

So are you gonna out and buy another different set of cans?

But I will try to beg borrow bully steal my way into a set of Beyer 250s just because I respect what the GH has to say.
I won't accept any more headaches.

Hey- I'm covered as to my headphone needs. I was just looking to be able to hand out headphones to a quartet in a pinch with no complaints.
 
doc - do you remember the classical guy, jnorman, who used to come here once? On another board, he had this to say about phones for control room use:

"...there is really only one choice in the sub-$100 range - the AKG 240s. they are, admittedly, low efficiency (not as loud as some others), but for the money they are very accurate (flat), comfortable, and provide good isolation. many phones in this range may be better for listening enjoyment, such as the sony 7506s, which are much louder, but not as accurate..."

He adds in a later post that he's perfectly happy letting the performer wear the 7506s.

I got some Sennheiser HD 580 phones a month ago. They're nice too.
 
Dobro... when I think about it, your jnorman quote is spot on to how I feel about 7506's vs 240's. I personally think the 7506's sound better and are definately much louder, but I guess they may not be as accurate - I didn't get to play around with the 240's long enough to make any judgment on that.

Although the 7506's may not be as accurate, I still believe there is something to be said about listening to something that sounds good even if you aren't getting a true picture of what is happening - after all you have to learn your monitors, so I don't see the process being very much different for headphones, and I think starting off with a nice comfortable set of cans that you enjoy listening to music through then I don't think it's a particularly huge problem. Infact, since I got my 7506's I've gone back and re-listened to all my old CD's that I hadn't listened to in ages and it's like listening to a completely different albums. Everything just sounds awesome through the 7506's -I can hear things that I never knew were there.
 
I know I'm knocking on the door to hell when I say this, but Koss makes some great phones, added bonus they don't cost much.

Will someone take their Sonys out for a compare, open your minds.

I bought the ATH-M40FS about six months ago......................................................................................................................................................................................................................i'll take $75 for them. I could have had the 7506's.
 
I started out buying 1 pr. of Sony 7506's and 1 pr. of AKG 240's. The volume difference between them is VERY significant. When plugged both sets into the same outlet I could not use them together - to hear the AKG's I had to turn the volume up so loud that the Sony's blew your head off. Conversely, with the Sony's adjusted to the proper volume level, you couldn't even hear the AKG's.

I returned the AKG's and got another pr. of the Sony's (and since have gotten 3 more pr.)

I'm not sure why anyone is concerned with "accuracy" of headphones. You're not mixing on them. That's what your monitors are for. So if they sound good, what's the problem. The Sony's get my money over the AKG's (at least in the sub $100 range).
 
just chiming in, i own the Beyerdt 770 pro's

extremely comfortable, great sound, i think about 180.00

i'd recommend highly

Buying KOSS is a total LOSS. They have been making stuff a long time but it is just that: STUFF. Tons of Stuff. Cheap? Yes. Quality -- try a good pair of phones next to KOSS and hear the difference. But, then, maybe I was a German Engineer in another life.

My favorite phones are Koss Nova 67s, from Radio Shack. Like I said knocking on the door to hell! Take your favorite phones down and compare for yourself, if you dare!

I can tell you right now that the koss will be more efficiant, and have much less midrange suckout, than your high dollar large diaphram phones.

Sooner or later your going to Radio Shack for a patch cord, just take your phones with you, and do the compare, it's the only way to be sure.

And I will go compare my Koss to Sony 7506s, if they are better, I will get back to you here.

I sometimes think that you actually have to spend less money to get better sound!
