Bad Vibrations (words and music by RAMI)

Finally thought of something to say
Then I forgot it right away
Might be just as well because every word of mine seems to be so out of line and cynical
Tried to live it close to the edge
Woke up hanging down from a ledge
Nobody for miles it might just suit me fine nobody trying to be critical

Chorus:
Got bright demeanour and no ambition
Got higher morals and lower standards
Got perfect timing the wrong location
Got good intentions and bad vibrations

You never know who's packing a grudge
So don't look now but here come the judge
Trying to find a little break in the law just got a punch in the jaw it's a ritual
Thought I had a hold of the wheel
Never thought I'd feel like I feel
Calling everyone to beat me when I'm down come and treat me like a clown it's habitual

Chorus:
Got bright demeanour and no ambition
Got higher morals and lower standards
Got perfect timing the wrong location
Got good intentions and bad vibrations

Bad bad bad vibrations
Bad bad bad vibrations
I'm giving out bad vibrations

Chorus:
Got bright demeanour and no ambition
Got higher morals and lower standards
Got perfect timing the wrong location
Got good intentions and bad vibrationss
Bright demeanour and no ambition
Higher morals and lower standards
Perfect timing the wrong location
Good intentions and bad vibrations

Loving the bass/kick interaction; they are working together really well. Sounds like you've got your room dialed in. Have I ever told you I hate you?? Well, I do. :D

I think the snare could use some more meat. A little more body or something to match the kick.

As for the song itself, really good. Love the bass and vox hangin out by themselves like that. Wasn't crazy about the Beach Boys throw-back, but I understand why you did it and I'm sure others will love it.

Anyways, I hate you and great job. :)

Thanx a lot Jimmy (hahaha). :D

I wanted a ring-y snare, but I'll listen for what you're talking about.

As far as the Beach Boys part....it had to be done. I didn't write the song with anything like that in mind. But once I had the title, and nothing in that bridge part, I decided to put in a Beach Boys "parody" part. It almost wrote itself, so I had to let it in. :)

Hey Rami. Really liked this. I agree about the snare needing a bit more meat to the sound, but as ever, that's a taste thing. I meant to comment on your previous post (Indian Summer), which I thought was excellent - the sound quality was far better to my ears than your post prior to that one. Bad Vibrations doesn't sound as slick a production, but I guess you'll get used to your room.

I quite liked the Beach Boys breakdown. Were the vocals autotuned in that bit - thought I could hear a bit of that going on (or maybe that's just my ears)?

Thanx Johnny. Well there seems to be a concensus forming on the snare. If enough people tell me it's weak, I'll re-track the drums. I kinda like that cheap snare sound for this tune, but I'm not married to it.

There's no auto-tune on the vocals in the Beach Boys part. But I did have to put auto-tune on theramin that's playing in that part, and I had to auto-tune it pretty aggressively. So, since it's under the vocals, you might be hearing the auto-tune effect "warble" under the vocals.

Thanx for the comments, man.

Where is the darn kazoo? lol!

Love the tune man! I'll throw in another vote for the snare comments. I like the sound of the snare, but it just seems a bit thin for the song.

I think the snare sounds fine, it just doesn't have enough presence in the mix. It also seems to be slightly jumping back and forth in the stereo field. That tells me that something is out of phase or off somewhere. I think it's thin-ish presence in the mix could be remedied with a healthy dose of the close mic track. It's tone sounds great, it just isn't working in the mix. The rest sounds great as usual. Good job on the theramin. If anything, I'd like louder guitars. Bigger guitars. And speaking of guitars, you ever think of getting another amp? Not that there's anything wrong with your current guitar sounds, but I think a proper tube amp could really take your sound to a new level. I've been consumed by guitars and amps for the past year or so now. My ears have learned a lot about tone and shit. You play very well and have cool riffs and licks. All you need now is that killer tube sound. :)

Thanx Chili.

I'm saving the kazoos for a song that really deserves them. :D

The song is amazing. Really cool groove. I also like the tight sound of the snare. This one goes straight to my mp3 player man, thanks. Inspirational stuff!

Weird. I missed this. Must have posted at the same time as me while I was at work.

I can probably fatten up the sanre without having to re-track. I think I hi-passed itpretty high, like 250hz or something. I'll check it out and try add some meat to it. If it's just a matter of volume, that's really no problem. I can bring up that snare mic.

Yeah, guitars have always been my Achille's heal. I'm never sure WHAT guitar sound to use. I don't think my guitars sound like shit, but like you said, a killer BIG sound would really help.

Hmmm...maybe my next thing to look into. I'd give my left nut for a an SG and a Marshall. If my guitar sounded like Angus in every song, I'd probably be happy.

Thanx man.

Your guitars definitely don't sound like shit. Yeah an SG and Marshall is balls to the wall awesomeness, but you can get in the ballpark with much cheaper and smaller alternatives because your sound isn't really high gain kind of style anyway. Blackstar makes some cool little crunchy amps that won't break the bank. I've always thought your music lends itself to a Vox AC15/30 kind of sound. Or a Fender. But those can be expensive. I've done a ton of amp shopping over the past year. There's stuff out there that could be just right without costing thousands. I actually really liked the little Egnater Tweaker head. I think it was like 350. Lots of switches and options on it too. I thought it had a good british style crunch.

Cool. I'll look into some of those.

I just put up a new mix with slight changes. Brought up the guitars a db, and brought the snare mic up about 4dbs, as well as re-EQ'ing. Probably not a huge difference, but hopefully a little ballsier.

Listening now....yup, better. I actually could still use more snare, but you know how that goes. Guitars have better presence. I still hear the weirdness in the overheads though. I don't know what it is. It sounds like an out-of-phase condition, but I don't know for sure. Like at 2:40 the snare in the overheads seems to jump to the left, and the back to center while some parts kind of lean right. I think you need a phase correction plug-in. :p

Man, I don't know what's going on with these overheads. It happened once in another tune of mine and we couldn't figure it out. I measure them meticulously. The only thing I can think of is maybe one of my overheads is slightly moving around as I'm playing. Time to do some experiments and see what's going on.

I have no problem with turning up the snare even more. I think someone once said that he heard too much snare in my tunes in general, and it stayed with me. So, now I'm over-compensating. Fucker got into my head.

Yes...a little more balls on the snare and a little extra kick on the guitars, otherwise it's nice and tight, clean breaks/transitions.

If it was mine...
I would loose the section with the Beach Boys thing altogether and the Moog-synth thing that pops in, and just keep it a hard-edged rock tune, and finally...I would at some screaming lead guitar in that spot. :)

Nah fuck that. There's not enough drums in most people's home recordings. Listen to any professionaly recorded and mixed track from any band in just about any genre. Do you ever heard buried and weak drums? No, hardly ever. I look at it like this: in my own mixes I hunt down the most rowdy and rambunctious section of the song. That's where I set my kick and snare level. I think it works for me. That might be too much drums for some people, but they're just wrong. :D

Thanx man. There's no Moog synth in there, but I know what you're talking about. It's a theramin, just like in "Good Vibrations".

I'm keeping that part in because it goes well the title. If it was called anything else, there would be no reason to have it in there. But it's perfect for "Bad Vibrations". :D

I'll definitely bring up the snare and guitars again. Thanx Miro.

I agree. And that's a good tip., setting the drum levels for the most raucous part of the tune and leaving them there. Good one. Thanx Greg.
