I'm running Cakewalk Music Creator 5 on HP laptop. I'm running a microphone through a nice, relatively new Peavey 10-channel mixer and into my computers input jack. I used this exact same setup on a Mac laptop with Garageband and got satisfactory results. However, every time I try to record on here, I'm getting a distracting amount of background hiss. The Cakewalk help page tells me if my input level is too LOW, I can get background hiss. I have the sound levels on my mixer exactly where they were when I recorded before on the other computer, so I'm not sure why it's unsatisfactory to this computer. If my input is too low, how do i raise it? The higher I turn the levels on the mixer, the more hiss I get. I'm a little stuck here...

It's the built-in soundcard on your HP. Get a Firewire or USB interface whihc then becomes your 'soundcard'.
