Background hiss

Hi all my first post and I've got a simple question, but since I'm new to this lark I was hoping one of you lot could help me out!

Right, I've got an all digital setup in my little home setup (digital 8 track & dat machine hooked together with an optical lead) and I've also got Sound Forge, here's my problem, I've only got a cheap and chearful PC (IBM aptiva Pentium 2 athlon processor) and when I connect my dat to my line in socket and recored into Sound forge to have a play with it, I get this irritating background hiss, now I've read most of the posts on here and it sounds like it could be either my cheap sounndcard that came with the pc (I haven't got a clue what it is but I dont think it's very good!) or could it be the hard drive making the noise?

If it is the hard drive, would upgrading my soundcard eliminate that or is it just that my sound card is naff?

Sorry to make it so long winded, I just want to make sure before splashing out on a digital soundcard that that noise is going to dissapear!!

Thanks a lot y'all!!

I'd love to get an answer to that as well (I'm using ntrack). I have a cheap C-Media onboard sound chip and have the same problem - but I don't want to buy another soundcard unless it's going to, at least, reduce the hiss.
