Either one to listen to, but I'm more focused on the Lion's Pride mix. Take a listen and let me know. Ask any questions you want.

Everything was recorded in a practice room and it probably shows.

Everything was through a Soundcraft M12 to a Delta 1010 into Sonar 3. Effects are all plugs and mostly UAD-1, some Waves EQ and reverb.

Singer wasn't the most amazing, but yeah, what can you do.

I'm recording for free for local bands until I get my chops decent enough to charge, so let me know what sounds good and what sounds terrible (toms much?). Thanks!

Bass drum is too weak and needs more work. The cymbals could stand to come up a bit. Something with the drums overall either sounds out of phase, doubled or plain out of focus-I can't put my finger on it exactly. If you have a room 'verb plug on the drums, you might try a better one or pull it back a bit. It sounds like you have everything there to work with but the drums could sound much better than what you have right now. Guitars and bass sounds perfect to me. The "vocalist" could stand to be brought down a notch or two. :D

I'd say this track is about 85% what it could be.

Which one did you listen to?

What exactly do you mean by the bass drum needs more work? Not present enough in the mix? Just sounds plain bad? Needs more click? More low end?

Yeah, the only verb is on the snare drum. Hm.

Thanks for the reply. :D

I listen to the the pride mix. Not too bad really. It hink the vocals are too loud in the mix,..is really all I would complain about. The mix though to me isnt airy enough. I'm not really sure how to explain that any better. But,..maybe for this type of music airy is bad? In mono,..the drums seem to be phasing. Maybe its the OV's? Everything seems to be where it should be except the vocal.

Take 'er easy,..
Calwood

Sorry 'bout that. I was commenting on your Lion's Pride mix.

Listening again, Calwood confirmed what I was hearing with the phasing and that might just be the only problem. I bet that's where all the drums's weakness is coming from although that bass drum still could have a tighter punch and beater definition (2k-4k region) IMO.

Again, it sounds like you have captured everything with the drums you need to make this mix jump.

Try muting one mic at a time on the kit with the rest of the mix (Assuming you have the capability) and you should hear the drums come into much sharper focus when you hit the out of phase mic. Do what Calwood said and start with the Overheads, though, as they're likely culprits.

I can't say anymore for certain unless I had the drum tracks myself to solo back and forth, though. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I'll check out that phasing issue when I get home tonight. Thanks.

Gave it 5 listens. Yes vocals could come down, as everyone else has said. Also I might scoop them a little. I know it sounds weird but they are coming in a bit harsh and tinny. Guitars could use a bit more mid and high range, they sound like all chug boom right now, If you know what I mean. I'm not hearing this out of phase issue, but I would say that the snare needs to either come up a bit more in the mix, or needs some of that metal body to it that all the new metal albums seem to have. The snare in this song should kind of smack you in the face. Agreed on the bass drum too, Its got plenty of boom and some good high click, but Its missing all the body click, which is what makes it stand out the most. I wouldn't go to say 2k-4k but I would say high mids, just a bit lower. If I were you during tracking I would have done a closer overhead method. I can hear your room a bit too much in the mix. Hope some of this helps, its not a bad mix at all. How'd you record it?

Thanks for the post. I don't exactly know what you mean by how did I record it, but here's what I think you're asking...

I did drums first, miked up snare, kick, 3 toms, ohs (spaced pair) and had the bassist play DI with the drummer. Then I just overdubbed everything else. Guitars were recorded with (left) senn e609 silver and d112 and (right) sm57 and d112. I didn't use the d112 track for the right guitar. Bass with d112. All the stuff except the vox were done in the same practice room, the vox were done at my apartment. Vox were recorded with a soundelux u195.

Sounds pretty darn decent to me. What mics did you use on the drums and where, including the ovh's ?

I uploaded just a drum mix onto the soundclick site so you guys can check out the phasing thing. I don't really hear it...

Hardcore should be recorded at the most horrible quality possible.
No, but seriously. This doesn't sound bad for this kind of stuff. It makes it way more "punk" and "DIY" and kids love that. Seriously.

I put up a new mix on there (mix 4a) to check out. People saying the guitars sounded dull made me look at them and I had boosted around 2k for guitars and cut the 3.5 area to allow the click for the kick to come through. I got rid of the cut and there was all the high end, so I ended up just having like a small cut there so the kick can still come through enough.

The mp3s are here now: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=497648
