Hey everyone. Im a newbie when it comes to copyrighting and stuff. Here's what i want to do. I'm a 14 year old kid who has written a couple of songs, with and without words and I want to get them copyrighted so I could maybe sell them (or play them on the radio with my band). I heard something about BMI but I dont understand it. Can someone tell me how It could work for me and how much it cost to register for?

Thanks alot
Jack

Kikling, there have beed endless threads about copyright issues on homerecording.com. I would suggest you run a search. I am sure you will find every answer you are looking for.

Unfortunatly I do not have alot of information to this subject because I try to avoid it. Copyright just seems to take the fun out of music!

Hey kikling,

Yeah, what Helmut said about the other copyright threads in this forum -use the search function on this BBS to find them.

But I can tell you that BMI is a performing rights organization. They, along with ASCAP & SESAC keep track of when your music is performed in public (i.e. the radio, TV, clubs/bars, etc.) and make sure the writer and publisher of the music are paid their performance royalties. So BMI is not who you go to for copyright.

Hope this helped.

kikling,
what teh others have said is true. You can also go to http://abiel.8m.com for more info on copyrighting.

The Library of Congress handles Copyrights. You can find all the necessary forms on line and print them out.

Happy hunting! if you need any more answers feel free to email me personally.
