Hi everybody - I wonder if you can shed any light on this - my creative 52x cdrom keeps disabling itself if i leave it switched on for more than about a day - like the cdrom icon actually disappears from the 'my computer' box and from the cdrom list in device manager - sometimes it reappears if i reboot - but not always. I saw that the creative software for the cdrom wasn't installed and so installed it - but it hasn't made a difference. Also at startup - the white writing on the black screen - it says all this stuff about a samsung driver for the cdrom - same irq # etc as the creative - and sure enough there is a samsung file on the hdd. Is that normal - i mean to have one make of driver and another make of cdrom? it strikes me as rather odd... Thinking back I bought it supposedly already installed - I just received a floppy with the cdrom software which said "sounblaster cdrom" - and no manual or anything - When the creative cdrom disables, so too does the hp cd writer - although that is still listed in device manager but with a red cross thru it - I think it said something about slave device somewhere... Can anybody make any sense of it? I remember the dealer looked kind of shady...:)
Cheers - Malgo

Sure, I use the samsung CD Driver on just about everything -Panasonic, Sony's, Panasonic and Mitsumi CD-RW, Pioneer DVD Drives etc., No problem.

I would check the ribbon cable and make sure it is secure at both the drive and motherboard. I do suspect that your drive may be flaky, and probably needs to be replaced (I've had a few of those Creative 52X die on me).

Thanks a lot Emeric - I will check it out. It's good to know that the driver thing is ok though - I really thought that was the problem. Malgo.
