I bought an Audio-Technica AT3525 for $164 on eBay. I've heard that it uses the same element (diaphragm) as the AT4033. I'd call that a bargain! And you know, it really depends on a person's voice, too. One mic can't always do all the work. :)

Hi prism,

I totally agree with you! But you have to agree that the mic did sound very good for a sub $200 mic.

Hey, have you a/bd the 3525 and the 4033. It will be very cool if they sound alike, so all of us who need cheap mics can finally get away from the rode nt1

Dragon And Sonusman

Now I really wish we had my friend Bryan bring over his NT-1...

By the way, the 3525 and 4033 caps are NOT the same. What you heard was SIMPLY a rumor; one I heard previously as well. The 3525's cap is "techically" considered a mid-sized cap and does not even have as large of a diameter as the 4033 cap.

Good to know, Mr. Engineer. I was a little skeptical about it. Still, I tried the 3525 at a local music store and I was darn impressed by it. And I mean, for $164 you can't complain! :)

I Haven't Heard It Myself

But I've heard from quite a few "ears" I trust that yes indeed, the 3525 is a very good mic for the money. I myself would take a 3525 over an MXL 2001, Audix CX-101, or ADK A-51; not to mention quite a few others.

And you mean you were "darn impressed" with the quality/price ratio or the quality of it compared to the quality of other mics? If the latter, what mics?

Well I didn't compare it to any other mics, (although I should have asked if I could compare it with the RODE NT2 they also had at the store) but since I could only realistically afford to get the 3525 I decided to give it a try. I was amazed at the rich response and SPL handling. You could scream into that sucker and it would sound clean. Can't wait till mine arrives from UPS ...

I had a chance to test out a Marshall 2001 against the AT4033 last night in a recording session. We did both Acoustic Guitar and vox.I was very impressed with the Marshall on both. They sound very similar. The Marshall sounded Fuller than the AT4033 but the AT had a little more top end Sheen to it. I also checked out the ADK 51 and liked the sound of it. It is almost identical to the marshall. We set up the Marshall and ADK in an XY configuration and thats the Sound we dicided to use on the Acoustic.

MMMmmmHHHhhhMMMmmm

And that's just my point EXACTLY. Thanx istyle for re-enforcing what I'm about to say without even knowing it because I haven't even said it yet.

Yes, the MXL 2001 and ADK-51 sound almost the same because they really ARE same mic inside; including the Audix CX-101, plus a few others. But why do they sound different at all? Simply because of production inconsistentcies (mainly having to do with the capsules.

In fact, if you were to go into a place such as Guitar Center and listen to 5 MXL 2001s right next to eachother, you'd be lucky if you found 2 which sounded even remotely alike. Heck, 2 with consectutive serials numbers have the same chance that they won't sound ANYTHING alike. THIS would be why there are SO MANY differring opinions on these mics; A LOT more than usual.

Also, Dragon, sonusman, and I have a little "evidence" to show how great the 4033 is compared to nice mics up to 4X the price. So stand-by for a week or two.

NT1 - not good?

I've seen some posts which appear to be maligning the NT1. Is the NT1 a good mic? How does it compare to the 4033? or the 3525?

Well

I'd take a 4033 over an NT-1 any day. Of course, that's about a $150US price difference, but well worth it. An NT-1 compared to an AT 3525? I wouldn't know. Anyone?

GUYS GUYS

I know that our esteemed leader (congrats RE) is a mic guy and so am I.
I think the Marshall unit is not the reason for the recording but the Mindprint.
I have had one for about 6 months now and I think it's an incredible unit. With a tube mic it's a dream. Even though it has tube on board. The tube can be added to your liking with a pot....... again........ http://www.mindprint.com

actually to add .....this month's Recording Magazine has a review on the unit.

Well......I am enjoying it.

Thanx Ears

I must say a LOT of people here have told me the MindPrint is a very nice pre. I just got my Recording Mag the other day and an gonna read that article after I get off this board.

And marsmusic.com is selling the unit(mindprint envoice) now for ONLY $499, shipping included. I ll tell ya that makes a man want to do things, like eat ramen noodles, just to be able to afford get it. Luckily I REALLY like ramen noodles.

It's cool to hear all this considering I bought one almost two months ago and it still sits in the box (the Marshall that is). Some day when I can get the woman, kid and pets out of the house to try it.....;)

I've used the Neumann TLM103, the Rode NT1 and NTV (one of my personal fav's), the CAD E200, the AKG 414 and of course the stand byes..SM57, 58 and Audio Technica through the Mindprint. The pre without the rest of the channel is so clean and high quality.Actually the whole unit is quiet. I'm just a purest.
I suspect that they EQ'd the mic in the front end going in.

I'll go back and tweak only when I have to. I like the straight in approach. It leaves me all the bandwidth on disk in case I need it to sit in the mix later. I will use the EQ and Compressor only if I have to.

Have you tried the Marshall, RE? Is it the Yorkville unit?
