I have a very, very simple question:
Why on Earth does my insert jack sound so radically different (just somehow strange to my ears) to my aux send jack?
A bit of a set up: I'm using a Soundcraft EPM6 mixer, and I have my microphone (a simple Blue Spark) running into one of the mic channels. I have this mic channel with zero EQ, gain set appropriately, and all other levels set to unity. The aux 1 send is set to as close to unity as I can get. The result sounds like this: https://soundcloud.com/nalanosivad/aux-send
And through the insert jack, obviously ignoring any levels except for the gain here: https://soundcloud.com/nalanosivad/insert-jack
My interface is an Asus Xonar Essence ST sound card (I know, not brilliant, but the line-in is perfectly clean enough when fed enough signal, and serves my two input needs well).
Does anyone have any ideas at all why it sounds so radically different? Could it be an issue with balanced/unbalanced connections? Or does the insert jack version sound better, and my ears are just being wonky? Also sorry, no, I don't have any good monitors to test out some pink noise or anything else like that. Monitors would be a tad overkill for YouTube commentary, I think.
The reason I'm asking is I'm considering getting a cheap but decent outboard compressor/limiter. Sometimes I shout, and setting my gain too low goes uncover some electronic noise I would rather avoid. Hence a compressor/limiter.
Thanks!
