Can someone please explain to me in a very detailed, step by step way of how to use automation. And what its primarily used for... effects and what not. Please, when it comes to this I have no clue. So please be descriptive. Thanks

In the simplest of terms automation is used to make something happen automatically at certain times in your song.

So one example would be if you need to turn up the track volume on the vocals during a quietly sung part.

But you can also automate pan (so you can have the pan sweep from right to left over a period of time) frequencies of eq etc...

I use automation to change the how fast the warble happens in this video:

Thanks I got it! Nothing to it really. Only difference is I use live audio like drums and guitars. So I think quantizing is outta the equation for me.. I'm not even sure what it is... something used to keep midi in tine I think. But I didn't catch how to change the hitpoints in automation. Maybe I need to watch the video more carefully. Anyways, thanks for the help!

Ah see though it can be used for more than what I did (actually, haha I have never done a dubstep song in my life I just know how to do stuff and made the video).

Say you have a blast beat, which has a snare that is hit softer by nature but you still want to hear it at that part. You can automate the gain to increase durring that part so you can still hear the snare.

Some other things I have used it for was to turn off the reverb on something so the tail didn't ring out during a quiet part. I've used it to make the entire song intro sound thin and then had the eq drop off so it came in full freq spectrum.

You can do a lot with it, it's recognizing when it's needed that makes it hard to use. haha
