Yo...

I have this jazz rock tune that intros with drums, piano & voice synth for eight bars...then the bass & vocals drop in. When they do...& for the remainder of the song...I'm in the red a touch, so I've got UAD-1's Precision Limiter across the master bus for spikes.

PL works great for this number...but changes the sonic character of the voice synth in the intro just enough so as to not make it ring as nice as it does.

Since the intro has no overs & hence doesn't need the limiter at that point, I was wondering...is there a way to automate the plug-in whereby it activates just prior to the end of the intro ??? I was messin' around with "Envelope Exists"...but have no idea what the f_ _k those are, except that I assumed that the "Power" exist may be the way to go...since envelope values above 0.4 seem to turn it on.

Is that the way to go...or is there some other method?

Thanks,

BTW - Now that I've thought about it (& tried it)...does that envelope only control power on & power off statically, as indicated by the on/off button toggling? Or is it a dynamic control (power coming on gradually)? What I'm worried about is what it will do to the sound if the plug-in comes immediately on.

I'm fairly noobish, but you should be able to split that track into two sections, this would allow you to use different plug-ins on the seperate splits. Select the track you want to split, and either click on the spot where you want to click, or play through and press "stop" at the precise location of where you want the plugin to begin. Go up to "edit" I believe and choose "split". That's how I've been doing it anyway with Homestudio 2.0XL
The other option, idea or what-have-you, once you split the track, you can copy the second portion (that you want to use the limiter on) to another track, so you can adjust the volume without compromising for the intro and the limited portion in the same track.
