I've never used it, but aren't the testemonials on the MF site from people who have used it good enough?

Yeah, good point, i read through them, I was hoping to get a better idea of how it works exactly, and I'd generally take opinions here a bit more seriously than the one on the huge corporation's.

I have one.

I can tune. But sometimes you just can't get it to sound right and this helps so much. It will alow you to tune your kit quickly and properlly.

Also people who've used this without being able to tune can now tune. It helps teach you how tuning a head works and how chaning the tension of the lugs relates to the tension of the skin and the tone it changes.

It works by finding the tension of the head at certain points on the skin (ie where you place the tuner). By getting every point around the head even tension then the head will be intune with itself.

When tuning by hand you're looking to make the skin an even tension eveerywhere. This thing lets you mesure it. :)

Thanks much, that is the kind of encouragement i needed to put me over the top on this.

i've had one for a couple years...at first it was very helpful...especially when putting on new heads... but the thing i believe that it did for me, was reassure that i was tuning ok i the first place...i always thought i was hearing the right pitch, etc, when tuning, but i guess there was always a degree of uncertainty...anyhow, like i said, it was a good reassurance for me. if you get one, you'll see that there will be times when you can't get a certain lug as tight or lose as it should theoretically get (if you are using the drum dial)...this is where your ears will come in play ;)

lolauto drum tuner in a word ready for it1234 its RUBBISH

DAMN I HIT THE WRONG BUTTON ANYWAY AUTO DRUM KET RUBBISH its a gimmick i had one and at first i was so proud then the time it takes you looking to see what setting its on your ears and natural feeling can do it better and faster infact mine is and has been in a drawer gathering clean pants

Drum Dial

I like to use it for high tension heads.I.E Marching!
I cant see tuning a Flam head by ear... :D

I've used a Drum Dial for about 7 years. I tuned by ear for about 40 years, so I do know how to tune. However, the Drum Dial is very helpful when changing heads (that's how I first started using one - when I worked in a drum shop and had to change a lot of heads).

As shortness indicates, the Drum Dial did confrim that I was indeed tuning well and getting even tension, which can be helpful to people who don't know how to tune (although at the end of the day, you still need to trust your ears!!!!). Tuners do make the process faster.

One of the best applications I've found is at gigs when the club is blasting music during the load-in and during breaks. It can be very difficult to tune drums when there are a dozen 12" speakers blasting AC/DC. The Drum Dial provides a reasonably accurate visual to make certain the tension is where it needs to be.

You can send it my way if you are not using it.

OK I need to pull this thread out of the grave. I finally got one of these things, and after using it ont he set, the snare sounds about twice as nice, I am very please about that. The one i got though barely gives any guideline as to what tentions to set heads at. It lists "typical" 5 piece settings and not much esle. Anyone know a more extensive resource for tensioning with varied drum sizes or to produce different tones for effect?

Thanks.

I'm not sure if there is such a thing, only because there are so many variables when you are tuning. Different drums, differents hoops, different heads, etc... I think the best advice has already been given, when you use this, I believe that it is mostly just to help you out until you are able to hear the drums better with your ears. Just my 2 cents.

Look around for the drum tuning bible. I don't have the link off the top of my head, but it is very good.

I have one of these and still had the same trouble tuning my drums with it than with out it. My kit is a piece of crap though (10 yr old $500 CB starter kit). The kick, I could tune well, but I could usually tune that by ear (and pillow:)) though.

I guess it only really helps if you know how drum tuning works in the first place and can speed up finding a good tuning and it will help you keep consistent tunings whenever the drum falls out of tune.
