Auditioning mics for a singer - What's the best way?

SteveMcB

Just some guy from NZ
I will shortly be recording some vocals with a talented female vocalist, but will not have a long period of time to do it in (just a few hours). Previously I've mainly recorded my self, and with experimentation and time I've gotten to know what sounds best on my voice, but with the time limitation, I want to know what you guys do as far as setup for auditioning.

Here's what I have:

Mics:
NT1
C1
Peavey 520i
SM57
MXL603

Pres:
Mackie VLZ (not pro)
SP VTB1

Do you:
- Line up all the mics just plugged into whatever (most likely mixer), select the best sounding mic, then try different pre's with that mic
- Try each mic with each pre, with all the attendant unplugging and replugging
- Try each entire signal chain (mic>pre>comp) with even more plugging/replugging

I'm very interested in how you guys do this...

Thanks,
Steve

what i try to do is listen to anything else that person may have
previously recorded before hand , this can give you enough info
to take an educated guess as to what will work best. you already
know your mics so by hearing her tone / dynamics you should be
able to get in the ballpark rather quickly.

She's only about 16, and to my knowledge hasn't recorded before...

My thoughts are that the C1 and NT1 may well be too bright, and that maybe the 520i is the best bet. (Yes, I do know it has the P-word on it). It's great on thin male voices, so I'm thinking it may well do the trick. Or a 57.
