Gentlemen,

I am having problems getting my Audition 1.5 to function correctly using the multi-track view of the software. In our band, we have 7 tracks that we need to record and have miced through our new Phonic Helix Firewire mixer.

In audition, I do to the multi track view and then set up the devices as well as the order. I choose the following that are shown from the mixer.

helix channel 1/2
helix channel 3/4
helix channel 5/6
helix channel 7/8
helix channel mainmix

I did not know what this x/x meant as I expected all channels to be simply separate, thus Helix channel 1, Helix channel 2, etc.

DOing some investigation, I learned that channel 1/2 means channels 1 and 2 on the first input into Audition and channel 3 and 4 on the 2nd input etc. Thus, from our mixer setup the individual channels were as follows

drums miced into channels 1,2,3
the bass direct into channel 4
1st guitar miced into channel 5
2nd guitar miced into channel 6
vocals miced into channel 7

We would simply record everyone via the main mix. Thus if the balance was messed up so would the mix. Thus some recording have vocals to loud or drums too loud or guitars too loud. It was always tough. Thus we bought the Helix.

We assummed that now we can multitrack each instrument and then balance out via editing later after we record. Well in each track on the multi-track view, I setup the input as follows:

Track 1 input 1/2
Track 2 input 1/2
Track 3 input 3/4
Track 4 input 3/4
Track 5 input 5/6
Track 6 input 5/6
Track 7 input 7/8

THis though does not seem to work :(. I cannot seem to get any output on the channels. How does Audition know to take the 1 in the 1/2 input to track 1 and the 2 in the 1/2 input to track 2.

I place the main mix on the edit view of the software and I get great recording from all instruments, but of course everyone is in the same mix and this is the reason why we upgraded our mixer in the first place.

I seen enough post around to know that Audition 1.5 does works with the Helix, but how they achieved their setup is beyond me.

My machine is a Windows XP Pro SP1 with 1.8gHz Athlon XP CPU running 1024 MB 400 DDR. It is a stand alone machine that has no use other than recording the band in the studio. I have no problems with Firewire connections and tried all ports just to verify. I have 2 ports on the PCI card in the machine and 2 in back of the Helix. All respond the same.

I did see something about disabling the Midi in another forum and I am down to do that but do not really understand why, but as we do not use midi this would not be a problem.

We have always recorded on the one track on the previous Mixer. We just upgraded to this so we could get our instuments on sep tracks so we could mix a better sounding demo.

Any and all help is much obliged.

Thanks,

FM3

To sort through this: first, the numbering convention is based on analog bus terms. In Options/Device Order/Wave In you would make sure all pairs are in the right hand column ("Use") and that the first pair is selected as "Use In EV" -- otherwise you'll never be able to figure out why your Edit View selections don't play!

Next, select the track inputs with the "In" button at the left end of the each track in Multitrack View. Right Click, and a dialog box will pop up that displays all the pairs you have in "Use" column in Device Order. The way I do it, normally, is to do the obvious and select the inputs in order (although there's no particular reason to do them one way or the other, just your own work habits). Check that you have mono tracks selected, by the way.

In order: Track 1 gets the "1/2" pair selected, with "left" ticked. Track 2 gets the "1/2" pair selected, except that this time you tick "right." In other words, each pair is one "left" and one "right." Track 3 is "3/4
", Track 4 is "3/4
" and so on. If you have more inputs, it may display the second 8 with the same numbering system, with each pair name followed by [2]. This is what happens with my two Terratec sound cards, each with 8 inputs.

Try this and see if it clears it all up.

For what it's worth, here are my complete settings in Cool Edit Pro/Adobe Audition, from an earlier thread:

"The Terratec Control Panel "Settings" shows "Source" as being WavePlay 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8; "Port" as PCI 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8.

In Cool Edit Pro 2.0, I see Options/Device Order/Playback Devices as
Unused: EWS88D System Wave, S/PDIF, Wave Mapper;
Used: EWS Wave 1/2 [EV], 3/4, 5/6, 7/8. The EV means that, in Edit View, channels 1 and 2 are used for playback. This is accomplished by highlighting 1/2 in the "Use" column, and ticking the box below that says "Use In EV."

Recording Devices are set the same.

In Options/Device Properties try unticking "Try as WDM" if it's ticked, or vice-versa. You will need to do this separately for each track pair.

The Terratec manual (it's the same book for the EWS88D and the EWS88MT) says:go to Start/Control Panel/Multimedia/Audio tab and set the Playback "preferred device" to "EWS88MT Monitor WavePlay" and the Recording to "EWS88MT Digital Mixer."

Hope this helps. As I said, this all works fine for me."

Track 1 input 1/2
Track 2 input 1/2

on track one select left channel only of 1/2
on track two select right channel only of 1/2
...etc

you may also need to pan your inputs on the firewire hard left/right down the line

~peace out
