Hey,

I am currently doing some recording on my PC and have an Audigy 2496 right now. When I use distortion, the recorded sound sounds... 'OK' but nothing great.

I'm looking at getting an Audiophile 2496. Do you think this will have increase sound quality over the Audigy?

Yes, definitely. And better yet, the 2496 is proven bit perfect while the audigy is not. I say go for it, without a shadow of a doubt.

I am recording direct right now. I assume that is the problem. I hear that to get a true tone from a guitar, you need the amp's speaker.... I'm getting that by going from the headphone out of the amp into the soundcard, I am bypassing the speaker and thus it is sounding a bit fishy.

You can't get speaker tone by using the headphone out. You shouldn't be using the headphone out for recording anyway.

If you want the true sound of an amp and cab, you're going to have to MIC the speaker cab. There's just no other way about it. Of course, what you hear in the ROOM is going to sound different than what the mic picks up. You really have to mic it and listen to it through headphones and move the mic around until you hear something you like.
