hi all, my name is Gene and i've been posting on the cakewalk forum but i'm new to this one.
we are recording drum tracks tomorrow using a roland electronic kit, and i have some concerns.
first, i can't hear MIDI with sonar. i used to be able to when i had my soundblaster 5.1 installed, but since replacing it with the audiophile i can't hear the midi tracks from one of the tutorials anymore. i tried cycling through the different outputs and still nothing. i made sure that my sound card, among others, is highlighted in the MIDI devices menu, and still nothing. BUT, last night while fiddling around, i got to hear the virtual keyboard from another program (Unity DS-1). so it seems that i CAN hear MIDI, but not in Sonar. however tonight the keyboard sounded crappy (delayed, chirpy sound).
i know we can record the drum tracks as audio, but i'd rather do it through MIDI so we can split the tracks and edit each drum and cymbal like you would if you were to mic a real drum kit.
i have a plan that i hope works in case we can't hear any MIDI tomorrow: we'll record anyway through MIDI, split the tracks, then play back each track while simultaneously recording it into an audio track. i'm hoping that even though we may not be able to hear the midi track playing back that it will still record into an audio track.
any insight as to what is going on inside my computer?
UPDATE:
ok, after reading through various help topics in sonar, i decided to check again my volume settings (i have XP btw). i went to control panel, sounds and audio devices properties, and on the audio tab decided to make "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" as my default midi music playback device. i already had tutorial 4 open (it has MIDI tracks). lo and behold the damn thing plays! i can hear all 3 midi tracks loud and clear. i decided to open another tutorial (#8) but when i did i heard nothing again. i made sure the new settings i did are still there and they were. what IS going on inside my computer?
