Audiophile 24/96 - sell or keep?

Hey all-

After doing some searching on the BBS here, I've found a variety of postings relating the the same issues I have:

I have an Asus A7V133 MOBO and the VIA KT133A chipset. You might imagine what I'm going to say next.....

Every time after audio is recording using the analog inputs of the card, my multitrack software (Vegas 4.0) upon playback has clicks and popping noises which are very obvious in the recording. I've tried 24 bit and 16 bit modes. 24 bit seems to introduce more problems, and even 16 bit is causing the prob.

I have:
Tried different m-audio drivers: both version 5027 and 5029.

Moved the audio card to different PCI slots.

Updated my software to Vegas: version 4.0c, and have tried numerous things in the software configuration trying to alleviate the problem.

Updated the VIA 4-in-1 Drivers. I'm now using Hyperion Drivers version 1448v.

Tried a PCI latency patch written by George E. Breese (this patch was a possible solution posted on the Homerecording.com BBS).

I have my system running fairly lean without too many extra sevices (I am on a small network, and am connected to a router for DSL). I have SQL Server Developer installed (use PC for web dev too), but have it OFF when doing PC recording.

When recording using Vegas, I have no other programs running at the same time.

Tinkered with the Audiophile control panel: changed DMA buffer to various settings, etc.

Question is: do I get rid of this card and move to something else (I used to use a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz with zero probs.) - maybe the Revolution 7.1 from m-audio? I absolutely love the sound quality of the Audiophile, but have simply run out of patience trying to troubleshoot this damn thing with my system.

I don't have the $$ or time to upgrade my MOBO to something that uses other than the VIA chipset.

Regards,

Warren

I'm at whits end

Think I'm going to sell this puppy and move to something else.....anyone interested? I'll prob. be throwing it up on eBay.

Personally I think that it's better to replace the motherboard. Chances are that a different soundcard will give you the same problems. The KT133A chipset is notorious.

Looks like the Echo MIA-MIDI might be a good option - according to the Echo website, my chipset is recommended for use with their cards. Seems to be talk as well that Echo works good with VIA, M-Audio doesn't.

I'm not happy with the M-audio tech. support either. I told them everything I did to troubleshoot, and ohh well.....

Ditto.

Don't blame M-Audio for problems with your chipset.

Didn't think I did! I'm just posting here for advice. I actually complimented m-audio for the quality of their product, I just can't get it to work on my system.

Thus the reason I'm asking for advice - I can't upgrade my MOBO and all that right now, but would like a card I can use.

Like christiaan said, its a gamble as to weather another card would work or not.

How much is it going to cost you in down time if another card doesn't work compared to getting the right system?

Thats a tough call! Downtime for both - but I'm thinking jumping into a new board someday soon would prob. be a good idea. I'm borrowing an Echo MIA to see of that might work - if not, well guess I'm headed to MOBO land.

Thanks for your opinions guys.

Hi,

Let me know how it workes. I have the same Mobo that you have and my SB Live is sucking pretty bad. I was going to get the MAudio card but I am now taking a wait and see attitude.

djcruz: I'll post back here with my results. It will be a couple days yet, but I'll get back here.

Good idea to avoid the M-Audio card unless you're ready to upgrade your MOBO.

Well, installed the MIA MIDI with the latest Echo drivers and I'm happy to report not one problem - clicks and pops, gone. The fidelity is awesome too. Installation was a breeze as well.

I recorded a couple different tracks using Vegas 4.0 in 24bit mode, and the sound was great. Didn't bother testing 16bit.

Apparently, the talk about Echo working great with VIA chipsets is true. A lot less work than a new MOBO.
