I think it is a good start. I think a DMP3 preamp would be a better start for around the same $.

its good..i have the 24/96 and the UB802

i have another question...how will i connect the mixer to the soundcard? will it be connected by the mixer's tape out to the rca inputs in the soundcard?

Run the main outs of the board to the ins on the 24/96. The main outs will be 1/4" I believe, so you will need RCA to 1/4" converters for that. On my 1604, I also run the outs of the 24/96 back to the board into one of the stereo channels and depress the alt-out button. That way I can listen to my headphones on the mixing board with the outs of the computer.

i just do it the old fashion way and reach a hand behind my monitor speakers to turn them off.

crazy kids and their routing capabilities (translation--I'm too cheap to buy a mixer with more inputs and routing options)

The main outs on the 1204 are XLRs - the Alt 3-4 outs are jacks. Get cables that'll do your job. If it was me and I didn't need MIDI or SPDIF I'd spend a little more and get a Delta 44 so you can have balanced ins and outs to take advantage of that feature.

But as a start combo it's certainly fine. A DMP3 would be good but you would lose the routing options of the mixer.

You can use the Source matrix for the Control Room/Headphones out on the 1204 to monitor direct, or just the stuff coming back from the PC. OR - And this is good for some applications - you can listen to the Tape Input without sending the tape through the mains to the PC. This way you can sing to a guide track or backing track without recording the backing - great for covers, karaoke and re-micing drum loops (another good trick).
