I have been reading about AudioBuddy having phantom Power read out ~41 V from Mojo Pie review. Since I'm really impressed with Studio Projects B3 spec. and the rave about it, here is my possible problem using it with AudioBuddy.

The B3 spec. (actually not only B3 but all Bs and Cs series) pointing out that it requires 48 +/-4 V . In case of AudioBuddy feeding 41 V, will it be a problem not giving enough power?

Please advise because it's crucial for making a buying decision. If the answer is yes or not sure, I would think about changing my preamp to DMP3 which will give me more accurate voltage. Of course, not changing the mic choice :)

Thanks a lot!
Bill

I think the Audiobuddy will work just fine, but I'd spend the extra $100 for the DMP3. On all of the clips I've heard of it, it sounded mighty fine for a $200 preamp. I've also heard you can talk stores down to $159 - $179--that's a 10% - 20% discount from retail.

Of course, you can also pick up the VTB-1 for $129.

I've got a B3 here right now. I'll try the Audio Buddy with it over the weekend or on Monday. I'm guessing it'll work as every condenser mic I've tried with it that requires 48v +-4v has worked fine.

The VTB1 is a very good choice at $129 even though it is one channel. At that price, the sound improvement on certain mics is worth it. And, it supplies excellent phantom power.

Either way, you're not going to lose any money with the Audio Buddy or VTB1. There is a guy with a good rep on www.gearslutz.com who is selling a Presonus MP-20 for a very reasonable price:

***

Presonus MP-20 - 2 channel micpre with mixer & inserts. Better then a Wackie, kind of a poor mans Hardy M1. Almost mint with box and manual $275.

Prices do not include shipping. NY/NJ buyers preferred. Am I asking too much? Make an offer. Low ballers will be heckled or ignored. email me: MooseAudio@aol.com

Thanks Tdukex and Steve!

I'm thinking of micing acoustic guitar in stereo so 2 channel pre would fit me. And I need a clean pre that DMP3 can deliver well (use it with B3, it should be pretty damn good).

I've checked Dot's listening session and found that the Buddy sounds a bit better to my ears than VTB-1 and Behringer UG on Bass and drum machine. That gives my the clue DMP3 may be better as well...

I'd like to here from Alan also, if 41 V phantom is OK to power up his mics...just to make it clear for anyone who are interested in getting SP mics.

But as Tdukex said, I think I'd invest a little bit more on DMP3 for now since it will take sometimes for me to go further for Grace, or Hardy M1...But, man! I really like the sound of the latter.

Tdukex, if the retail can take it down to that range, I'd definitely go get it right away...Not sure if Guitar Center can do so...I'll try.

Good Deal from GC!

Follow up on my previous post.

Guitar Center can bring DMP3 down to $169...$30 cheaper than web retail. Plus tax, would be $180...Good price!!!

I have been using an Audio Buddy for years. I think it is very
different from the DMP3. The Buddy attenuates on both the
lowest frequencies and highest frequencies of the audiable range more that one would desire. But it sure beats the preamps in my
Behringer 602 mixer for vocals. One of the better mic preamps I
have used was the EMP-1, a single channel solid state pre. It was
a little noisier than most, but everything that came through it was
a joy to listen.

I am not sure what you want to hear from me. Dot has publically stated that he prefers the VTB-1 over many much higher priced mic amps. You prefer the Buddy, many like a Neve, some like DBX, others ART, some Manley...

I mean where does it all end. Do what your ears like. It dosen't matter how much or how little you pay for anything. If you like it and use it, then its good. If you don't...its bad. It is all opinions, nothing more, nothing less.

I think he's asking if the B3 will work with 41V phantom power.

i hae a Studio Projects VTB-1...only demo'd once... for $140

I was trying to give my opinion to Steve that I preferred the Buddy based on my ears and from what's Dot provided us...and stated that it's better on some intruments.

And...yeah, Flatpicker! Seem like Alan hasn't answered me the question...or not sure how to answer.

It's not that I don't know how to answer...there were two different questions thrown at me. As for the power voltage, 41V will work, but you will start to have issues at 36V.

The Audio Buddy is a good unit, but like every unit it is not perfect. Seems to me its main drawback is the power issue, otherwise a very good deal for the money.
