I'm going to upgrade soon and purchase a new machine. The last one I bought was a P III with a lot of RAM and Win XP from HP. I'm wondering is there anywhere you can get Laptops built specifically with Music Production in mind? Any web links are appreciated, bearing in my I'm in Ireland so US stores mightn't be much help to me.

paulybear, why don't you do a quick search in the computer recording section, and see what people are using for laptops. I've seen a few advertised in magazines, but I'm in the US, so what I see may not help much. Some I've seen are from Dell, ABS, and ZT. They are not specifically foe music, but you can usually tailor them for what you want.

Don't know if this helps, so good luck.

Unless you need portability, I would suggest that you use a desktop.

You will need to let us know your budget.

What kind of music you're making.

What do you need to connect.

Equipment you already own.

I'll post a few links for you.

Sorry, left out some info there. My budget is around 2,500 euros (around 3,000 dollars). For that I'm looking for a laptop with 1GB RAM, fast frocessor, 80-100 GB hard Drive, 15" screen, and an audio interface in the M-Audio Firewire 410 range. Obviously, I'm looking to get it optimized as well with Win XP.

Wow, I'm thinking of how good the desktop PC I could build for $4,170 Australian which is 2500 euros! I'm looking at the Dell website, they also have an Irish site as well so you can get local prices. Anyway I just configured one of their notebooks with these specs:

Intel Pentium M 2GHz
Windows XP Pro
1024MB RAM
100GB Ultra ATA HDD
8x DVD Burner
Wireless Networking
17" Screen
Bigger Battery

All that came in at $3631 Australian. Which leaved you some money left over for your audio interface. I'm not saying go buy a Dell, but as far as prices go it's a start. You can go to the Irish version and get local prices for you.

The main thing with audio PCs are lots of RAM, fast processor, big fast hard drive. I think you can also get notebooks with a second hard drive, but I'm not sure.. Anyway I hope thats a start. Still thinking of the desktop I could build with that much money though.....

consider mac

I would really consider a powerbook, but if you're heart is set on windows good luck.

i'd love a powerbook, but unfortunately it's very hard to "get software" for them compared to pc's if you know what i mean, and i already have all the software i need for windows. as well as that apple is expensive.
