Experts,

any suggestions of an interface with an affordable price, but great sound quality for a home studio? My biggest fear is buying something cheap that has bad sound quality. I am all about "spending alot to get great value and worth". but i am also about saving if I can find the most affordable and dependable. SO let me know guys!

Thanks

Well I'm not an expert but I wouldn't say that the sound quality is that dependent on your interface, that is down to what your playing, monitors, the room your in and many other things there is a few that are good but what kind of budget do you have, what requirements do you require (things like XLR inputs, Line Inputs, Headphone outs etc).

The man is correct. You will not get amazing recordings from an amazing interface. But yes, how many inputs are you requiring?

Yes, interfaces aren't gonna make or break your recordings on their own, but they are still an important piece of the puzzle. What Tom mentions are other pieces, but no ONE thing is necessarily the KEY ingredient.

An interface on its own with no other hardware in the signal chain, acts as the preamp & the converter. Both have important roles in the recording process, and skimping on these won't do you any favours, especially when doing recordings with several tracks. The lesser quality preamps tend to lack clarity and this becomes more apparent when your start layering track upon track. Converters also have to turn the preamps signal into quality digital samples. A solid preamp with a weak converter, doesn't get you very good results either.

If you don't need any more than 2 inputs at once, aren't planning on using other outboard gear in the signal chain AND have a Mac, the Apogee Duet can't be beat in its price range, IMHO.

check out the m audio firewire for single input firewire interface..served me well until i upraded to a firepod. Still use the m-audio for like live midi.

I have a macbook. Upgrade of 4gb RAM and 320 hdd space. brand new. i do hip hop so all i want to do is vocals over pre-made beats. I just need an xlr hookup to a mic, and a stereo outlet for my headphones.

Firewire devices preferred.

An interface is the least of your quality worries (as others have said). Any of the current crop of small interfaces (USB or firewire) are going to deliver very good results (at least in their own operation).
