Hello,
excuse me if this is a really retarded question for you folks but I've been looking into getting one of these new fangled audio interface gadgets for my lap-top ( and for any other computers i get in the future) - I am however not finding what i really want just rummaging through e-bay and doing google searches.

My home set up is pretty basic.

A 16 track mixer, with 8 direct tape out channels- so all my mic's and D.I's go into the desk. I like the desk, the pre-amps are okay, and the phantom power is way better than other portable stuff i have.
I dump four tracks live through the tape outs straight into a Fostex MR8 ( panning tracks to get them onto sperate tracks etc)

then i either mix stuff down on the fostex, (bounce it down i suppose) to a stereo wav. then convert to mp3. Sometimes if i have not gone to mental doing re-takes i export the song files into N-track or Audacity- but i get really pissed off mixing on the PC.

what i really want is a replacement for my 8-track fostex reel to reel tape recorder- which is currently fucked, i.e i want a simple way to use the hard drive on my lap top as a virtual reel, i also want 8 ins and 8 outs so i can mix with the desk and add crap "real" effects.

I'm not rich so i have been looking on ebay for fostex hard drive recorders, but the only ones in my price range are old ( like the D10), and offer a paltry 20 minutes.

so in short, i want 8 in and 8 out with no fucking about with silly plug-ins and shit. something basic and functional.

any ideas?

cheers,

Blasty.

thanks

I'd allready roughly heard of the Presonus models through looking at Jason Lowenstiens gear list at Jakerock. He's a dude so i might get one of them. I think i need to down load manuals and research a bit. I wonder if all these gadgets work with Ubuntu Hardy Heron? Vista gives me stomach cramps.

Cheers,

Blasty.

Be carefull. Tascam mixer will only record only mixed stereo with USB 2.0 not a single channel!

Zoom is nice option I think.

The Tascam M-164 mixer is 2009 just released http://www.tascam.com/products/m-164uf.html
Copy & Paste
The M-164FX adds a stereo effects processor with 16 programs of reverb, delay, chorus and other great-sounding effects. Step up to the M-164UF for a 16x2 audio interface that works over USB 2.0. The interface built into the M-164UF has the highest channel count of any mixer, allowing all 16 inputs to be recorded to their own track in your computer recording software.
I'm debating over the two ... and can't afford either until new year

Hmm interesting.. Contraversal...

Step up to the M-164UF for a 16x2 audio interface that works over USB 2.0... shows it will only record a stereo mix with the USB.

The interface built into the M-164UF has the highest channel count of any mixer, allowing all 16 inputs to be recorded to their own track in your computer recording software. And this says opposit. Strange..

I've read a couple of reviews which state that the Tascam acts as a multi channel interface.
Tascam however, does very little to promote this mixer as a true audio interface so I went looking for the manual.

Chapter 5 if you're interested.
I come away thinking that it will work but not sure and that's after reading the manual!?
At best, it's just poorly written.

Place me solidly in the Zoom R16 camp. I used it this weekend for some projects, one tune done entirely on the R16. Pretty amazing piece of gear that works beautifully as an interface to the computer or as a stand alone 16 track recorder.

Like a full fledged, multi channel interface?
Saw one in Tom Lee today. Hard to figure how they got all of that in such a small package.

Yeah. This thing's pretty clever. It's very solid as an interface, solid as a recorder and control surface as well. It's not excellent in any area...it could use a couple of features in the recording functionality, and the control surface needs a few more assignable controls, but for the money, it's tough to beat and is a very capable compromise of features and cost.
