when i record i turn my gain as high as it goes without clipping on my pres....and after i look at it on the computer screen its like a line with a few bumps on it...so i mix it and ive got all my stuff playin consistently between -4 and -.2 db....it sounds right my meters say its right but on the screen the image is stilll that line with a few bumps...but if i use the normalize function the image changes...but its not as loud as when i mix myself and its noisy..so how can i get the image to reflect the actual volume? thanx....i should note that when i bounce my tracks to a final stereo track that does look like it should...taking up the whole dynamic space

Without knowing what DAW software you are using there is no good way to answer your question.

Some DAW's have a 'preferences' or 'setup' function in which you can set the scale or resolution of the display. I remember using this on Cool Edit which has become Adobe Audition. Try looking for something like that.
