audio diistortion

Hello all,
I'm having a bit of a problem getting "clean sounding" audio to run thru my system. My
multitracking software is Logic Audio Gold 4.6 and my soundcard an m audio audiophile.
Whenever I playback a vocal track, for example, I get a stuttered sound.
It sounds a bit like a skipping record with a lot of digital interference. The soundcard is
loaded as it should be and I only have problems when it comes to WAV files. What could be
causing this?
I record audio via a sony mdmx4 four track which I'm using as a DI box before running it's
stereo outs into the audio inputs of the audiophile.
I'm using a Dell Pentium II V400 with 256 MB of Ram and a 6 gig hard disk, 65% of which is
unused at the moment. I have recently reformatted my entire hard drive so I don't think
there can be any conflicts in the system.

Audio problems can come from a variety of sources, so they are difficult to track down.

A couple of suggestions:

1. If you are not using your USB port, disable it.
2. Try lowering the latency on your sound card.
3. Try disabling APCI in your BIOS.
4. I'm not familiar with Logic Audio, but there are probably some settings within the program that you might want to play with (e.g., increasing buffers or lowering latency). Also make sure the playback device is set to your sound card and not Sound Mapper.

There's probably other ideas as well, but these should give you a start.
