tell which I should get and why

mainly, I'm concerned with which has best converters and most stable drivers, as well as the ease of use of the control panel...and lastly...which is "better", lol.

Disabled on board sound & driver
Released all available IRQ's
Downloaded all new Windows updates
Downloaded chipset updates
Tried soundcard in all 3 PCI slots
Disabled anti-virus software

^Do I have to address ALL these issues when installing a soundcard??

this is type of stuff that makes me want to get a standalone mtr...can someone tell me it's not that difficult and I will be able to do it???????????????

look all the problems this guy is having:

http://sound-on-sound2.infopop.net/...f=351097254&m=995104072&r=856109482#856109482

Thought I'd let you know I bought the Emu 0404. I can't comment on it yet, though, as I haven't been able to get it to work.
Before I go any further, I have to say I don't think that it's the fault of the soundcard. I have some PC issues that need resolving. Maybe someone can help. I have tried everything that I have been advised to do (special thanks to Glen and Martin for their help here).
I have formatted my H/D and installed Windows XP pro. with SP1.
Disabled on board sound & driver
Released all available IRQ's
Downloaded all new Windows updates
Downloaded chipset updates
Tried soundcard in all 3 PCI slots
Disabled anti-virus software
Nothing cures the problem - which is distorted sound, sound breaking up during recording and playback, and no sound at all, sometimes, when I click rec. on sequencer (cubasis 5), or when I press * (rec) on keyboard.
My PC is Time Model 504W03GB3
Mother board is Micro Star MS6340 with VIA chipset
AMD Duron 700mhz CPU
256mb RAM
80GB H/D
Has anyone else had a similar problem? If so, how did you fix it?

pacman9000, boy I done told you.....

Delta 1010 on Windows XP Home is proven, period. I can't vouch for the Layla because I have never dealt with one. You can always upgrade the Delta 1010 converters through Black Lion. They mod 1010s. Before you ask, they are in Chicago. For the money, you can't go wrong with a stock Delta 1010. And Black Lion's prices for modding are reasonable when you consider what they do to it and what it sounds like when they are done. I hear they rival the best ADCs and DACs out there, when they are through with your box. Not that they sound crappy now or anything.

Disable onboard sound & driver - You should only have 1 soundcard/interface enabled at once, so yes. If you have an onboard soundcad, disable it through the Windows Device Manager.

Right-Click "My Computer", click "Properties". Click the "Hardware" tab and select Device Manager. This is for Windows XP, might be a little different on a different version of Windows.

Download all Windows Updates - I only have up to the SP2 of Windows. I haven't downloaded any updates past that. It's good to download/install the Windows updates, but only in rare cases will it effect your soundcard/hardware. Unless Windows has an update for your soundcard driver. Unless it's onboard/popular, it probably won't.

Download all chipset updates - This can be usually done through your BIOS manufacturer website (ASUS/ECS, etc.). I haven't updated mine in years.

Tried soundcard in all PCI slots - Only if you have problems installing it. If you do, try another PCI slot.

Disable anti-virus software - I personally don't run anti-virus software. If you know what you're doing/downloading, you won't have to worry about this. BUt it is important to disable it while installing the hardware drivers.

Thanks I appreciate the breakdown, now I know how to disable the onboard soundcard...

but also what are IRQ's???! what is their significance/what do they do!?

Why do I need to "release" all available IRQ's??

What about sample buffers and whatnot...and setting the latency...all of this is lost on me I need A Crash Course in IRQ's, sample buffers, latency and how to inable the new sound card?

echo just seems like a more reliable company to me, could be that more people have Delta's so more people complain, but I've read of a couple issues where it seems m-audio is cutting corners (like the unbalanced inputs and output 1/2 having a little hum, slightly more drivers issues), but I could be wrong......thanks for the heads up on that modding company, that is a plus on the Delta 1010 side.

Pick one...either one...order it from Musician's Friend. If you don't like it, send it back and exchange for the other. Yup...they'll let you do it.

which one has a component housed seperately, I heard people saying one has some component(s) housed seperately and the other doesn't but can't find that info

I think they both have the converters in a breakout box though, so it's something else...

anyone use pro-tools m-powered?

In what ways is is superior to tracktion in terms of audio editing capabilities?

uh yes, HELLO! this forum happens to be labeled for "soundcards" and these are two popular soundcards and people in these forums are supposed to help me that's what you are here for, so snap to it, not now, right now!

What do you just come on these forums to read questions and not give help, do you feel good about yourself? I feel sorry for your mother...

I've never used a layla, but I have had my delta1010 in THREE computers and on TWO continents over the last SIX years, and it has always worked great. I still use it today. It is truly a solid card that is worth twice the current retail price (which is what I paid for it six years ago...).

There is only one correct answer: buy neither. Put the money toward a gun and two bullets...just in case you miss your brain the first time.

IRQ's are interrupt request lines. They basically the I/O's linking (sends interrupts) something like maybe a keyboard or a mouse, or communications port, or whatever it is, to the CPU.

Usually two different devices cannot share the same IRQ, or else you'll get problems all over the place. Basically, it'll send a interrupt to the cpu, telling it that it wants to start working. Simplified

thanks, I think I'm beginning to understand...but I was reading some mackie document and it said alot of times devices to share the same irq...it had a diagram where a bunch of devices where using IRQ 9...they said it can cause problems but are you saying that no two devices can share the same IRQ???

or does it automatically release them sometimes if you're switching from program to program, like tracktion to soundforge?

I guess I still don't get it, that mackie thing was confusing as hell, fukn bullsh1t

every fukkkin forum this same question gets asked and every forum nobody helps people out with opinions on which they like better...that's great people, be really proud that you come to a message board designed to help people, solely to not help people and try to make online "friends" lol

that's quite alright, I've decided agains teh musician route, murderer seems to be more up my alley.

Frankly, your abrasive nature has me so turned off right now that I simply don't care if you get what you need or want. As for making friends with you...not likely.

I asked the same question you've posted here several years ago. I found the suggestions helpful and the support with implementation very good. Perhaps it was my approach.

I'm a gentle soul btw...far from abrasive, it is you who sounds rather crass and unrefined.

I'd bet I've done more helping of others then you have as well, have you ever volunteered at homeless shelters and even provided shelter to troubled homeless youth as well as buying meals when possible?

I didn't think so, now kindly fukkk off u crass asshole.

Everything has it's place. But this is Homerecording.com not Homelessrecording.com.
