what is this?
Hey guys, all the positive things that everyone has said about the RNC and the RNP are finally starting to get to me. I gotta get 'em! If you guys don't mind me asking, did you buy them direct, or through a distributor? If anyone did order direct, did they charge the entire MSRP? (I'm on a budget here...) I don't live far from Austin, where there are a couple of music stores that sell them, but if anyone has any comments (positive or negative) about ordering direct, please let me know.

I ordered mine from Humbucker Music (http://www.humbuckermusic.com)... At the time they were throwing in 2 mic cables and free shipping...

I was like you and had heard enough good things about them that I had to have one... I ran across this site, and it was fairly close to me and I could receive it next day, so that was the biggest reason I bought from them...

I've had no problems with mine...

Nice folks there, the RNC is the nicest sounding, easiest to use comp at this price point. You will love it and Mark, at FMR (well he IS FMR) is a great resource if you have any questions or problems with it. I have a pair of em and they get used on vox all the time

Get two...

http://www.8thstreet.com/product.asp?ProductCode=21129&Category=Audio_Processors

This was a fair price and they throw in a free cable to hook it all up, which I thought was cool. And free shipping is always a plus.

FunkLogic NCC-1701 (Trekkies use compression too, I guess  ) looks great in the rack! Best of all you get 4 channels of very usable compression.

Like you, I heard a lot of good things about the RNC. On Harmony Central there were like two negative reviews: one said it sounded like phased out crap- then I realized that's just what happens when you hear both the input and output signal on top of eachother. In other words- user error.

The only other complaint I saw was that the bass sounded like it was farting out. That is often what happens if you're hitting it with too hot of an input. Back down the input and raise the attack and you should be good to go.

I'd been using a shareware plug called PeakComp from Sinusweb(awesome plugin, btw), but I wanted an outboard compressor, and I must say I really like it so far.

Anyway, shop around on the internet to see if you can find a better deal. Cheers, Rez

Honestly Ken I bought it as soon as it came out... A week later I took my studio down and moved. I haven't put anything back up yet as I'm still searching for a building. :(

I have the RNLA. It was my first leveling amplifier. I was trying to use it like an RNC and was getting a buzz/distortion out of the unit. I did some research, though, and discovered, as it is so often, that user error was to blame. Now, if I dial in the RNLA subtly, it adds a wonderful color - truly nice. Not only that, but it's useful and pleasant on everything I've tried, from direct electric guitar to drum overheads to vox (wonderful on vox). It's got a bite that I love and I suspect would satisfy many-a homerecordists gear lust for a device that truly adds a magic touch to a track.

I bought mine in a parking lot in front of a studio from some shadowy guy named Fletcher from Mercenary Audio.-Richie

the opinions have changed a bit on these items from what ive seen. a couple reviews on some other boards said the rnc isint all that and one said it works more like a good clean plug in . i guess it was trying to say it had no character. the rnp is a mid level pre that use to get high praises but i have read many opinions that it aint all that either. most of the hype on those units were from a couple years back when the market had nothing too much to offer. if it were me i would take the money for both and buy one good mic pre. maybe a single channel of great river, api, or hardy depending on your needs. then you will have one piece of pro gear that will sound great and hold its value. if you need something to get cheap and mid level just get a m audio tampa then you will have a good compressor and mid level pre with digital out for less than 300$

You really don't know what you're talking about. Have you ever used either one?

Of course not. Just another dweeb posting bad 3rd party info.

I got my rncs from Atlas pro audio. all the clients who have been to my humble little studio love what it does. It is NOT a distressor, and is not meant to be. But it is great at what it does.

i just wanna let you know that there are several other fine recording boards out there along with this one. the information i found and read is out there i just love doing my homework. those 2 units have lost there charm for myself and have been burned too many times by people like you who say this and that is so great!. now i go to boards that actually post clips of what things sound like. i will never get caught up in things. thats why my sp c1 is long gone and the vtb-1 as well . HYPE- HYPE- HYPE MONEY- MONEY- MONEY go right ahead and buy the rnp and rnc BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET. thanks you!

sounds like you're getting caught up in the "if it doesn't work for me it must not work for anybody!" game

I did the same and was very very pleased with the RNC.
Compared to a Alesis 3630,Boss, Behringer, Joe Meek, Tascam 2488 onbooard compressor...the RNC was just as good as expectations, or better.

YMMV...recently i usually :
1) Try to find it at a Brick and Mortar store..where I can see it, hold it..take it back if needed at $0 cost.

2) Online new, if not locally available. shipping back can be a little $$$, but then you don't usually pay taxes either.
Online..forgot the company,
I did have a small issue when it arrived a knob was loose on the RNC, very minor, but hey! it was New!
So I called the Online dealer who told me I had to work it out thru FMR (who said send it back for checkout).
I luckily only had to tighen a bolt and it was fine, looked like it was due to packing it. I didn't send it back due to it being a minor hassle.

its sound made up for it tho. it sounded as good, or better, than any I've had the pleaseure to try out.

3) Ebay, if rare, vintage, or just desperate trying to save that extra$$$ used.
I haven't got burnt yet...been pretty good little gear-sale tool.
But its High Risk and can be intense until its all over.

Well said Coolcat, I have no issues with folks who like or dislike gear I use. I have issues with people telling me it's crap when I know it isn't. That is why we all say YMMV. Some homeys are getting good results from berry, alesis and the like. Cool!
Just because it hasn't been my experience doesn't mean it isn't happening.
I couldn't get a c1000s to sound like anything good in my studio, I sold it. Han and some others say they get nice tracks from 'em. YMMV.
That's why we don't all drive Chevys.
Doesn't make anyone right or wrong, makes us different.
