how many folks in here are trying to make a living writing/recording/producing music?

Why?

Is it working?

I'm just doing it for fun right now, with hopes of getting enough experience to make a living, or at least some money at it later.

Cause it's fun.

include performing in the sequence, and yes I am trying to do that.

because I love it, and It kills me to work a 'normal' job.

and it is not working right now, I have a long way to go.

i should have started a poll. S'ok

Interesting though isn't it.

Ok, let's include performers as well because that counts as much as anything else in music.

I'd like to hear what the out and out songwriters have to say. The gals/guys who write, don't record, don't produce, and don't play live. Just write for the sake of writing!

Between performing, retirement check, studio, and songwriting I'm able to do OK. :D Unfortunately, that is also the order of value in terms of dollars in. :o

very cool. Do you perform your own songs, or mostly covers?

Yep, I'm trying by "just writing".

An impossible question to answer briefly without sounding trite or snide.

Is it working?
It might be, the jury's still out.

I've read that the average songwriter's take is under $5000/yr, by the way. But statistics don't tell stories or circumstances or even who's included in them. The best way to proceed is to make sure you're not "average".

I'm trying by doing all of that... and it's half way working. I'm only 20, so we got the young crowd, but our music has a wider appeal. We got played on MTV and we are going to be touring this summer. We have an album out and it's on the radio in Virginia (and other places now?). We're getting there.

Why do I do it? It's not even really a choice for me. I don't feel like I can choose to stop doing it. It's just something I do or that I have to do and I don't know why. I do all the writing, engineer the recording, and I do the promotion and managing right now. I'm usually pretty stressed out.

that's a lot. Why not get your band mates to do more? I can relate, i did all the admin for my old band, plus songwriting. Its a lot.

I am doing what I am purely for the love of the music. I realized that much of my frustration in life when I was younger came from a desire for other people to like and approve of me and what I was doing. It made me jealous and pissed off. Now I'm happy and while good things have come from my music, I figure it's something that will happen or not regardless of how "driven" I am.

I built a studio and record music I like with my best freind. I am happy.

I perform as much of my stuff on a given night as the crowd on that night will allow. Drunken cries for Freebird and Proud Mary, etc are annoying but I learned a long time ago that's what pays the bills. (At least for me.)

I have a regular 'dayjob' involving audio for post-pro for TV and film, which pays rather well. But I also make a bit of money doing music/audio-for-picture. Most of my current clients are web/interactive based.

For example, tonight I'll get home and put together some sound effects for my game client. Probably write a few more pieces of music on Saturday for it too.

Do I make a living from it? No.
