I get the theory but I can't tell the difference if the attack is set low or high. The same with the release. What am I missing? Does that mean I need to compress harder or something?

If the attack is too slow then you will hear the sound get loud and then suddenly drop in volume. If the release is too slow you will hear the sound drop in volume then slowly get louder.
If you aren't hearing a difference then you probably are using very light compression. Just to experiment turn the ratio to 10:1 or higher and lower the threshold until you see at least 8db of compression on the meters. What compressor are you using?

ok i am sacared, maybe you will see this messege, and probably ignore it but , I NEED HELP!!!! i despretly want to be a singer but i have no conections and can't even find a decent vocie teacher, and above that i have no support what so ever!!!!! please give me some advice , i need help....

I takes a bit to understand compression well and I assume this is part of your the problem your having with the attack and release. Depending on what your applying the compression to, settings can have quite a large range. Though I'll try and give you some starting points.
The threshold is where the compressor starts working so this setting is important in order to hear what is being done to the file that is being compressed. If your a vocalist then I'm going to assume that your applying compression to a vocal so try this starting point. Compress at a ratio of 5:1 keeping your attack fast(around 1-10ms) and your release at about 250ms adjusting the threshold and keeping an eye on the reductions meter as to how much your compressing.
This is just a starting point but I think you can be on your way using these settings.

Mary- This is a discussion on attack and release, which are parameters or settings used in compression, which is an electronic tool for controlling dynamics in recording, that is, limiting the extent that a signal gets louder and quieter. You need to post your question either in the newbies forum, or in the event forum, which has been hijacked by the singers around here. Somebody, possibly myself, will try to help you. We will admit to being confused that your member profile says you are from Columbia, but you say your primary language is English. Could that be like, Columbia, North Carolina?
And a troll is a person without a life that gets their kicks by pushing people's buttons because they're bored. If you are not one of those, we'll figure that out, and you will get help. Crank the threshold right down, set the compression ratio to it's maximum, set the attack to the smallest/shortest setting and set the release to it's longest setting. Now play around with the attack time and see what happens.
Messing with extreme settings makes it easy to hear their affects.
