ATA controller card?

Are ATA controller cards still necessary for HDD's larger than 137gb?
Was this one of the issues addressed in XP servicepack 2?

If they are still required, how does one know if they already have one or not, or whether their mobo will recognize >137gb?

Huh? It really depends on the BIOS in your motherboard.

The BIOS is what determines maximum HD size and different motherboards have different BIOSes...

So to answer your question... Check with the maker of your motherboard to see if they have a BIOS update or something.
