Be Here Now
Just got a AT4033 yesterday and recorded a mariachi singer today with a beautiful midrange and strong voice. I noticed fairly little difference between the AT 4033 and Baby Bottle on his voice. The AT4033 was a little more up-front and had slightly more presence, the Baby Bottle was slightly more smooth.

We ended up using the Baby Bottle because it sat in the mix better, but they sounded pretty darn close. If you're itching for a Baby Bottle but don't have the $ I think it's pretty fair to go with a used AT4033 for >$200.

Interesting. That's not what I hear at all. I hear the 4033 as more accurate, and brighter, with the baby bottle having more color and more midrange. I would use the 4033 for an acoustic guitar or as an overhead, and the baby bottle for backing vocals and female voiceovers. I'v got one lady that is recording a whole bunch of spoken word, and we've tried the 4033, C414, baby bottle, C2000B, and SM7 on her, and the baby bottle usually wins out. I think of the 4033 as more like a poor man's 414. Come to think of it, we mostly gave up using the 4033 because the 414 did everything it did- better.
Keep it coming, though. Just because you hear something different than me doesn't mean your experience is any less valid. It may be that preamps, rooms, and the eccentricities of the human voice are a factor, or that not all 4033's or all baby bottles sound the same.-Richie
