Yo i wanna upgrade my AT2020, was thinkin bout a MXL Genesis. I record hip hop vocals (almost only)
If you like or dont like the MXL Genesis let me know why, and let me know alternatives! $500 is my budget!

Pending what you have for a preamp ..... I would audition the Shure SM7b.

Hey buddy just wondering. Is it better it invest in an Audio Interface or a Preamp then a XLR to USB connector or something?

That's a tough one to call in a general scenario. Those type of considerations are on a project to project requirement.

I would choose to go with a dedicated interface.
With a boutique preamp.
That compliments a fine microphone.
That compliments the vocalist.
Within a treated room .....
but that's just me. :D

Man, that sounds classy. :D

I thought interfaces already had a built-in preamp? So why another pre-amp?

Darren, I don't know how much or how little you know, but here's a bit of info.

Mic preamps accept microphone level signals and amplify them to line level.
Converters generally accept line level signals.

Forgetting the data side of it, audio interfaces are generally made up of preamps and converters.
Some interfaces also have separate line level inputs. These are a direct path to the converters.

You can put your own microphone preamp into the line inputs for better quality, different sound....whatever it happens to be.

Hope that's useful.

So basically, if you were to use a microphone pre-amp then into an audio interface, it will be converting the signals twice?

Nope.

Signal path with separate units =

microphone - cable - preamplifier - cable - analog to digital converters - cable - digital audio to data converter (that's usb/fire/whatever)

In an interface, all the bold stuff is built into one box.
If there's a line input it bypasses the preamplifier (whether on the same channel or a separate one, which is why you'd plug your own preamp into a line input.
