Hi,
I just got a At2020 Mic and when I am trying to record sound by plugging into the mic there is no sound. However when I looked at the documentation it said it needs phatom power.

I am new to sound recording, and hence I am wondering if there is a way to get around this. When I hook up my cheap mic I can record the sound.

Now what am I missing here?

The reason I don't want to have all this equipment is because I travel and wanted to have a small mic where I can record my mp3 in the hotel rooms.

Now - Do I have a choice or not. If not what is the best possible solution, both keeping in mind the size of the equipment and the quality of sound.

Your help is much appreciated.

Regards
RM

Your best bet is an inexpensive preamp that provides phantom power, as there is no way around it.

Try something of M-Audio. They make decent mobile preamps that supply you with gain (you need to boost the mic signal first), phantom power and an interface to your laptop all in 1 unit. They are not that expensive either. Check out www.m-audio.com

Also, make sure to use an XLR-XLR cable, not an XLR to 1/4" into the preamp. You can't provide phantom power through the XLR to 1/4".

Does a mixer provide the required power

Hi,
I was wondering since I have buy some kind of pre-amp I would rather go ahead and spend little more money and buy a mixer. Would a mixer provide the power it needs or I will still need a pre-amp separately.

Thanks for the prompt info from you all.

Yeah, a mixer (with phantom power) would provide the power it needs... but a mixer might be a little more bulk to carry around as opposed to a small preamp.
Also, it depends on how many inputs you want.

You might consider the Peavey PV-8. It's smaller than a ThinkPad, and the pres are nice. :D

Or...

I'd vote for the Studio Projects VTB1 mic preamp. PMI, the folks that designed and are distributing this very cool preamp, have a few B stock VTB1' for only $70. That makes it a no-brainer to me...

Check out the specs here : http://www.studioprojects.com/vtb1.html

Then go to their B stock listings to see if they've got any left.
