At what point do you start (or stop) making the band sound better than they are?

A pro studio will make bad playing sound even worse!

Yeah pretty much this, although if you have a band that is good (at playing) but sounds bad due to gear it will make the band better...

The problem though is bands with shitty gear don't always realize their gear is shitty.
