at 4060 and mxl v69 mogami??

At our modest studio, the MXL V77 has become the default vocal mic for male vocalists. It sounds really nice--so nice that we did several double-takes during our first recording session with it. We had a 4060 for a while, and it was a great mic too. Worth $700 more than the V77? I didn't think so. The 4060 got sold because it was a luxury for a studio of our caliber.
We have a bunch of other similar-priced mics to the V77. C1, NTK, 4033, C3000, and some others. The V77 is just better for male vocals. It does something very "vintage" to the vocals.

Here's a couple samples (vocals with V77, live, very dynamic singer, some compression after the fact):



If the V69 is anything like it, it is a great deal. The V77, at $350 online, IS a great deal.
 
ok...so v67, v69, or v77? Has anyone tried all three? Or maybe two of the three? How would they compare to say a Cad M9? Seems like there are actually some decent mics in the $300 range.

Hmmm. Let's see . . . other than the Audio Technica sounding really good, smooth, professional, etc. and the Marshall like a cheap, harsh Chinese budget condenser with a toob in it, I'd say they're just about identical.

Sounds familiar, maybe I read a quote like that in another thread.........

I have all 3 of the MXL mics. I've owned the V67G and the V77 for almost four years now, and the V69ME was bought new when it first came out, so they've all been running here almost non-stop since I bought them.

The V67G is the darkest of the trio, the V77 is the most neutral-sounding, and the V69ME is the richest sounding of the three.

During the Barbara Dane sessions, I used the V77 at point blank range without a pop filter, when the RCA 77DX wasn't getting the right sound (too muddy up close for her voice).

On Pimpadelic's latest album, we used the V69ME for most or the vocals, with Donnie about 8" away, thru a pop filter. On a few tracks, we used the Shure SM7 for the vocals.

On Tuesday, I used the V67 for the vocal on an acoustic rock duo, when the V77 seemed a little too bright for the right vocal blend with the two acoustic guitars. Singer stood about 6" away with a pop filter.

In my opinion, the Studio Projects T3 is also right up there in sound quality, and offers multiple patterns.

I've never heard the CAD M9.

Yes. Apparently another thread in which the poster in question was speaking about a piece of gear with which he has no direct experience. This board would be a far better resource if people would refrain from doing that.
