Jag--you got it right. Its a great versatile mic. I bought mine back when the list was around $700 and I didn't know how lucky I was to have picked that mic. I used it for vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar on occasion, voiceover, percussion, saxophone, mandolin, handclaps, harmonica--etc. At the time, it was the only LD condenser I had. I spent a lot of time with it and learned what placements worked best with different things. Its still around and still gets used so its been a good investment. At the new $300 price, its a great buy.
It sounds very clean to me. It does have some hyped highs, but they are musical--not harsh. It sits well in the mix. I have other mics now and I like those too, but if I had to only have one, I'd choose the 4033 over the others I have.
