I have seen these mics everywhere and, to the point, used for a wide range of purposes. So, with respect to the 40 series, do the different models excel in different areas and if so, what are they?

I have a pair of 4033's and a 4047. The 4033's are like a Swiss Army Knife. Medium sized diaphram condensor mic. Decent on vocals but not my absolute first choice there. Great drum overheads, fantastic on acoustic guitar and very good in front of an amplifier for electric guitar. One of my favorite microphones.
The 4047 is transformer coupled large diaphram and sounds warmer than the 4033. Very good for female vocals and some male.

I like the AT4047SV for electric guitar & vocals, the 4033 for acoustic & electric guitar, the new 4040 is really nice too! The 4050 is a great microphone as well. All of the 40 series microphones are great. Depends on your taste as always. Listen then decide which one fits your needs...:) Out of the whole 40 Series series I find myself reaching for the 4040 and the 4047SV most of the time.

I love my 4033, though you shouldn't trust my opinion, since I have a very very small mic selection. That said, it gets pretty decent sound without a lot of effort.

Wish I had the cash to get another one....

I just picked up a 4040 for $179.99 from Mars Music...brand new (gotta love clearances), I can't wait to get e'erything set up to use it...

Charley which Mars? Can you order over the phone?

hey, I got it at the Mars in Castleton, Indiana...unfortunately tho, they closed down for good this past Sunday, I was there on Friday and there was basically nothing left. I was really lucky to find this one...there were about 4 mics left...an AT4033a, which was also $179.99.

Wish I could help ya =/

Heck, they had a Motif there for $900!!! and I believe the Roland XV5080 for $850...don't quote me on that one tho. But wow, had I had a few thousand with me, I woulda picked both of those up and re-sold them. Unfortunately I'm a broke college student working two jobs and holding on to dear life to maintain my academic and athletic scholarships, lol.

The AT 40xx series covers a lot of ground - so much so that it is hard to generalize about them just based on the first two digits.

For instance, there are the 4031 and 4041 small diaphragm pencil-style mics, which have pretty much nothing in common with the 4060 which is a large diaphragm tube mic, except for the fact that they are both black.

The main reason for asking this qestion was becuase there are so many choices. Each has it proponents and each its oponents. The problem lies in the fact that it is extremely hard to demo these various modls without being able to take them home and use them for about one or two weeks on various sources and in comparison to other mics.

Becuase of the inherent flaw in the purchase process, absent some other access to the products, we must rely on what others with experience have to say. Becuase this is so subjective and, for that matter, vriable from studio to studio, home recording environment to envrionment, it is nearly impossible to do anything but guess and pick the mic that either looks nice or catches our fancy in some non-audio, non performance sort of a way.

It is not that people here don't try to be helpful. This site is full of people with realy edeication to this art, who so apparently love the whole thing and are brigh, articulate and full of ideas about recording and recoding gear. Yet as many times as you can ask a question trying to use the collective experience on this site in place of a better demo process, that is how many different and valid answers one gets.

After all is said and done, whatever choice I make will ultimately be anything from blind faith to a complete but slightly educated guess.

I suppose that is just the nature of the beast.

I tell you rhat the AT4040 has a full 1" diaphragm & it has a lot of output...a pretty frisky microphone in that department. The tone is pretty smooth and silky overall. Different from the other 40 Series LD microphones sonically speaking. I like it quite a bit. Lastly a great value for the dough. :)
