so my first thoughts on the AT3060: this thing is pretty cool! like War said, i wouldn't consider it a Go To mic, but i can definitely see where this mic could have its uses. i tried it on vocals and
acoustic guitar so far. my acoustic didn't like it very much, it came out sort of boxy sounding and not as smooth as i would have liked. on vocals, it definitely has character and seems to work OK with my own voice (if only it could correct my pitch!). i guess you can describe it as 'lo-fi', but that's not to mean it totally destroys the sound.
so far i've just been running it thru a GT Brick, and the results are pretty nice for rock vocals. the highs are present without being too bright, and i found little need to do any corrective EQ to help it sit in a mix. tomorrow i'll see how it interacts with the stock pres on my Firepod, but combined wiht the Brick, it sounded quite nice. it tends to stick out if other sounds in the mix are really clean, but when combined with distorted guitar or whatever, it meshes well. i wouldn't use it for recording a simple acoustic piece or anything like that.
it definitely wouldn't be the first mic i'd reach for when recording vocals, but it has a certain sound to it that's quite appealing if used sparingly. to me, though, it doesn't sound like a $500 mic. good thing i got it for less than that (with some free sucky headphones). but yeah, i'd use this mic for some darker hard-rock type stuff, but not on anything that requires a squeaky-clean vocal sound.
