How is the self noise on that puppy? I got rid of my 3035's cuz they added too much, ummmm, well, self noise.... I guess, ya know when I got the level high enough to get a good track it was all, um noisy....

I have had my eyes open for a decen tube mic for several months....I have considered the AT 4060, the SE Electronics Z5600 and the Gemini an several others in the sub $1000 range.... Wonder how this mic would compare to the 4060....

Never heard one, but I just read some reviews and it sounds like it's not the kind of tube mic that people are thinking when they think tube mic. In other words, it doesn't have those well defined characteristics of "big" and "warm".

"permanently polarized..." doesn't that mean the same thing as back electret like a radio shack condensor?

Isn't "externally polarized" generally the spec on a nicer LDC?

I found the AT3060 to be an effect mic to give you that lo fi vibe. It's a nice mic but I was neutral on recommending it or not due to the price. At half of the old street price... it might be worth pulling the trigger. So much has changed in the marketplace since I reviewed it though.

BTW, here's my review... http://www.mojopie.com/at3060.html

i took the plunge. seems like a good deal, and i could really use another LDC. i'll let you guys know what i think of it...

also, thumbs up for Audiomidi.com. i ordered this thing around 1:30 PM pacific, they called me about 20 minutes later to confirm my shipping address, then i got an email later on that my order had been shipped, same day. very cool.

The reviews I've read weren't that enthusiastic. Shop carefully.
yeah, i have no experience with this mic, i just learned of the deal in the audiomidi spamletter and remembered that mshilarious raved about it. i don't know if i'd want a starved tube (if that is an accurate analogous description)mic

I think a lot of notable mic companies, including Josephson, AKG, AT make SDC mics or capsules that are back electret. For example, the AKG C451B is a back electret.

I don't know about LDCs though.

Shure makes quite a few as well.

OK i got my AT3060 in the mail today with my free pair o' cans. looks good, can't wait to take it home and give it a try! i'll post my thoughts later tonight.

first thought on the cans: not half bad...these will be decent for tracking. very comfy, the isolation is OK, the sound is not that great. these will definitely be a step up from my Wal-Mart special Sony cans, haha.

Steve / Oz, you nailed it. "Lo fi" it is...not a go to mic of any sort.

follow up on the cans, they actually kinda suck. but they are nice and light, comfy and would be great for tracking. i'd say free is a pretty good price for em. i just got home and am about to test out the mic, so i'll report back in a few hours or so with my initial impressions...

so my first thoughts on the AT3060: this thing is pretty cool! like War said, i wouldn't consider it a Go To mic, but i can definitely see where this mic could have its uses. i tried it on vocals and acoustic guitar so far. my acoustic didn't like it very much, it came out sort of boxy sounding and not as smooth as i would have liked. on vocals, it definitely has character and seems to work OK with my own voice (if only it could correct my pitch!). i guess you can describe it as 'lo-fi', but that's not to mean it totally destroys the sound.

so far i've just been running it thru a GT Brick, and the results are pretty nice for rock vocals. the highs are present without being too bright, and i found little need to do any corrective EQ to help it sit in a mix. tomorrow i'll see how it interacts with the stock pres on my Firepod, but combined wiht the Brick, it sounded quite nice. it tends to stick out if other sounds in the mix are really clean, but when combined with distorted guitar or whatever, it meshes well. i wouldn't use it for recording a simple acoustic piece or anything like that.

it definitely wouldn't be the first mic i'd reach for when recording vocals, but it has a certain sound to it that's quite appealing if used sparingly. to me, though, it doesn't sound like a $500 mic. good thing i got it for less than that (with some free sucky headphones). but yeah, i'd use this mic for some darker hard-rock type stuff, but not on anything that requires a squeaky-clean vocal sound.

well guys....looks like they dropped the price a bit more...now its $249.63....and still have the free phones....

Zed32, I was wondering if your a 350Z owner by any chance. Looks like the same Z as Nissan uses.

damn i shoulda waited and saved myself 10 bucks!

nah i'm not a 350Z owner, but i did have a 300ZX at the time i created this name. it was a Z32. but i'm a huge fan of all Z cars.

I pre-ordered one before I even knew if I could fit in one. I'm a Z/Datsun fan I love the old Z's. I just took my 03 Z out of storage the other day. I only put about 4K miles on it each year still under 13K. Any way I start it up and it sounds like the motor is going to fall apart. after investigating a little I figure it is coming from the ventilation system. Sounds almost like ball bearing flying around inside.
Called the dealer and they tell me it sounds like mouse activity, I check some frequently used mouse hangs out. The air intake is filled with dog food, the ventilation system is filled with dog food. The motor for the fan is fried have to take in back when the new one arrives. Ended up being a $400 dollar deal.
I hate meeses to pieces, the next one I see I will smash it and grind it into the concrete.

My plan for next winter:

1. No dog food in the garage.
2. A hungry ferocous cat.
3. A well padded car cover to save finish from cat.

haha! that's crazy man. i remember one of my aunts got this brand new Jaguar a couple years ago and she had it in her garage for less than a week after she bought it and some mice chewed through the EFI wiring harness, so the car was completely dead. and i don't think it was covered under the warranty either.

i love the 350Z though, sweet ride. i checked one out briefly when i was searching for my new car, then cross-shopped the Infiniti G35 for a minute until finally settling on my '05 Subaru Legacy GT. i guess i really wanted something with a turbo and more room, hehe. i wonder what the new Nissan GT-R is gonna be like?
