Getting better
On the advice of several folks who know immeasurably more than I do, I upgraded recently to a CUSL2-C motherboard with a 1 gig CPU. The problem: I cannot seem to find an option to allow DMA sharing (I hope I"m articulating that correctly). It was a setting adjustment that made a world of difference to my hard drive recording before, when I was on a Celeron 400. But now I just can't find the setting option. I go into the hardware settings and go to my hard drives and there is NO DMA option.

I heard somewhere that you have to go into the BIOS to change this. I have never been in the BIOS and frankly, I don't relish the thought.

Can anyone help?

You should have a CD that came with your mainboard.

On it there is a program for installing the ATA driver, after that installs you should have a program under start>programs>
Intel Ultra ATA storage driver.

You may have already done this. If so, go to device manager and double click on disk drives - what does it say?

If it says generic IDE disk type 47, then it looks like maybe you didn't install the driver.

If it say the actual name of the drive (maxtor, quantum etc) then DMA is most likely already activated. You won't see the DMA checkbox option on mainboards that have ATA 66/100 controllers (unless you didn't install the ATA drivers from the mainboard cd)

Check out the Intel Ultra ATA Storage driver program first though.

What is your hard drive, is it new?

Emeric!

I was hoping you would respond.

The hard drive is circa one year old. Not a 7200, I don't think. Only 20 gig. I have a second hard drive, only 3 gig or so, but the 20 gig is the master.

I don't remember what it says about the controller, but I will go into it when I get home and see. Perhaps you are right, and DMA is already enabled. That would be awesome.

Thanks. I'll let you know what I find tonight or tomorrow.

Okay Emeric,

I did not install the MB myself, but when I look in my programs I do indeed have Intel Ultra ATA storage driver listed as a program. However, when I click on it it doesn't do anything - in other words, I can't find the program.

When I double-click on discs in device manager, it says generic IDE disk type 47.

So, what do I do now? I have an instruction book that come with the MB that describes how to get into the BIOS program and how to enable DMA sharing. Should I go that route? Or is there an easier way?

Thanks for your patience,

Fab

Do you have the CD that came with your mainboard?

On that you will find the ATA driver/program.

If you don't have the CD you can get the driver at www.asus.com.tw

Buy 'do nothing', what exactly does the program do, bad path to the executable or other?

I looked on ASUS's site I can't find the driver. If you don't have the CD for mainboard let me know, I have a few at work. I can email you the drivers.

I do have the cd, at home. (I'm slagging off at the office again!) I'll try to find and install the ATA driver from the cd. I perused the manuel that allegedly explains the cd but couldn't find any discussion of an ATA driver. But I'll find it if it's there.

By the bye, excellent CD! I never got the chance to tell ya. Folks, if you like professionally recorded Beatlesque pop-rock, check out Emeric!

Once you get the CD, try installing the driver, as well, depending what operating system you may want to select the 'update inf' option to.

Let me know what happens.

Thanks, glad you liked the CD!

Put the CD in, installed the ATA driver and bang - DMA appears to be enabled. When I playback in Cakewalk, the hard drive indicator has gone down to nearly nothing. Your advice seemed to do the trick.

Thanks again!
