Assigning midi to tracks

I am having problems assigning midi instruments to tracks. Forgive me if I am unclear I am new to Sonar. When I assign a instrument or drum map to the track I get the GUI to read right but the drum map never changes. In short I want to use new (and hopefully better) drum sounds than the defaults but I fail to get it. Could someone help be trouble shoot if the problem is me or the software.

The sounds itself has nothing to do with the Instrument Definitions or Drum Maps you're using, it's the MIDI source that counts. What is your source? An external synth or a DXi?

Ok I'm gonna show my experiance here...What is a DXi? If you asking how I created the midi, track, I used extract timming to create it. Oh and sorry I am using a SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum.

Woa.... I think you should read the first part of the manual. That would really help you understanding the basics.
