Hi All. Long time listener first time caller. I've been on working on a few mixes in my home studio and could use some feedback. First track is called Asleep At The Wheel and it is here: View attachment Asleep At The Wheel.mp3.

I played the instruments myself, except for the things I did using Reason. :) I've been trying to perfect it for literally years and now I feel I need to take a step back and release into the wild for critique. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Hi tonic..

Interesting piece of music you've put together there. I am hearing tuning issues, particularly in the start where the piano is demonstrably flat against the guitar, but elsewhere as well.

I'd also have to say that at some point or other pretty much every instrument has some timing problems. Most noticably the bass, but also occasionally the drums and electric lead bit, piano, and general guitaring.

I think you need to retrack it against a click... or at least redo the bass bit where you're playing a staccato rhythm - eventually you get on the beat but it's taking you a couple of bars to get there - it's the most noticable timing issue.

Like I said, interesting piece of music, but if you want it to sound professional, I think you're up for a complete scrap and rebuild alas. And if you played all the instruments, you perhaps need to address your timing issues before you start.

Others may differ - and don't be disheartened, ya gotta start somewhere.. .:)

I have to agree with Armistice. I definately like the tune but the timing issues would take more surgery than it's worth and it still wouldn't be "right".

You do know that is also the name of a band, right?

Thanks for the comments guys. Most of the instruments were recorded to the click but I have noticed the bass as a problem before. Back to the drawing board for this one.

Agree with what's been said about the tuning and timing stuff.

The other thing I'd add is that the low end of the bass is a bit out of control. I'm on headphones. I'm not playing it loud and the phones are shaking.

I also agree that it's a cool tune.

Yeah, there's some really cool ideas in here. I like the bass sound a lot, but when it first comes in it seemed really off timing wise.

Seems like there's some strange boosting of some mids and upper mids overall with the mix too. Did you do some substantial EQ work on the mix as whole? If so, maybe back off on that a bit. Is there a harpsichord in there somewhere or is that just acoustic guitars? There's acyually a ton of different sounds and sections to this, which is really cool, but I'm not really sold on the mix at this point.
