Do I get the 414 mkII or the 424 mk III? I'm on a budget of just over $500 and thats for a '58 too. I'm a beginner, and I know the 424's better, but is it worth the extra money? I know there is a review of the 424 mk III against the 424 mk II, but what about the 414?

When I first started half a year ago I got a second hand 414 .. a little while later, I turned digital and started using my computer instead and I don't use my 414 anymore. However the 414 now serves me faithfully as a mixer.
My point: Spend some time thinking if you would be considering digital in the future. Save a bit more money and get a digital setup. It's more flexible and fun !

Yeah, but I'm skint 4 digital...trust me, I would if I could. It's a 424 and a couple of crappy mikes, or a 414 and an SM-57 and a small TV for my room!?

In that case go for the 414 and get the SM57. You rather have a good mic (but less recorder feature) than crappy mics (but more recorder features). No matter how good your recorder, your recording's not going to sound good with crappy mics i.e. the sound is as good as the weakest link. Think about a good mic-preamp as your next investment, it'll make your SM57 a great mic.
