ASIO troubles..I think?

Cubase AI4. I also downloaded a patch for Vista.

First off. I've barely ever used Cubase, and not this version or on this computer.

I can get sound through my mixer and it's recording into Cubase, but I get no playback in my headphones through the mixer OR through my computer's speakers (although WMP still works fine). I'm pretty sure it's got to do with my VST setup, but I don't really understand what VST is and I'm having trouble with the ASIO codec. I had to completely re-install Cubase AND download the Vista patch just to get the full duplex driver to even show up. I don't know what these settings are supposed to be, and I'm completely frustrated after two full evenings trying to get it to work.

I've only got USB AUDIO CODEC showing up as an input, and my regular sound driver is showing up twice as an output. I'm 99% sure that's my issue. I can't output through the mixer as a soundcard. Pretty much any change I make to those settings on the main driver screen in Cubase will flash a warning that a critical error has occurred, and I can't save my project. But, I can't seem to get the USB Codec as a viable output device anyway, so it doesn't matter.

I got this way by following the directions in my Yamaha MG166c manual to the letter..twice. It's so brief, it doesn't account for ANY problems.

I'm out of ideas, and irritated. I know that probably didn't make a lot of sense. Any guidance would be most appreciated!
 
It can be a bit of a nightmare getting CUbase configured for the first time on a system, particularly I would imagine on Vista - my advice would be to head on over to www.cubase.net and get use the tech support for registered users. I had difficulties until I disabled the onboard stock soundcard - because I was using a rack mounted dsp card. Still took a bit of tweaking, the cubase forum helped a lot. Don't bother trying if it's not a legit copy though, you have to register using the serial no's etc.
 
What ASIO driver do you have? I have a Lexicon Alpha. On my driver, Their is a Monitor Mix knob. On one side, it says direct and the other, playback. I don't know if you have the same equipment (or similar) but you want that know in the middle. Direct, their will be no sound going out but all will be going in. Playback is all the sound going out and none going in.

that's all done in the devices tab... the drag is you need to go through and make the inputs and outputs separately....

to add to this, when you have done it once, save the session (even if it has nothing in it) as a template. You can even go one step further and make blank tracks configure how you like them

It's a legit copy. It came with my Yamaha MG166c USB mixer. I've seen that slider that was mentioned, but I don't think it was labeled the same way. But, I do remember it was in the middle and I recall thinking it made sense being where it was. This thing is mostly frustrating because it doesn't quite follow the instructions in the book. There's just enough there that's the same to keep me wishing I didn't shave my head, so I could pull some hair out.

I can get the ASIO full duplex driver to appear as my input, but not as the output. I just can't seem to figure out why that is. I'll see if there's anything on the cubase forum. I had forgotten they had one over there. I remember helping my dad figure out his brand new Lexicon Omega was broken by registering him on there. Try introducing a 58 year old guy with fairly limited internet experience to forums! ha!
 
Let me ask, though. For the one who said he had to disable his on-board sound...do you just disable it when you record, and enable it when you're finished recording?

No, that would be a total head wreck - I disabled my onboard card then assigned the rack unit through for media through: start/control panel/system/hardware/device manager
