ASIO Drivers - What are they and do I need them?

Just getting into all this stuff. Heard about ASIO drivers but not sure what they are and if I need them. Can anyone shed some light? If I need them, where do I get them?

My setup:

PII - 400Mhz
Abit BX6 Motherboard
128MB RAM
New 7200 RPM 20GB Western Digital
Windows 2000
M-Audio Delta 44

It's a proprietary driver architecture for PC audio devices... boasts low latency and most of the things claimed by WDM drivers... note that you need an ASIO-compliant software application to make use of these. That means Cubase or Logic.
 
Should have mentioned that I'm using n-Track. Where can I download these drivers? Thanks!
 
M-Audio drivers all come in one download package. The latest drivers for Win2K are dated 3/5/2001, so if you don't have em you might as well grab em from http://www.m-audio.com

To use ASIO, you simple go into the n-Track preferences and under Wave Devices, choose "Delta44 ASIO". If you don't see the option, or it doesn't work, then your copy of n-Track is out of date and you should download the latest build from http://www.fasoft.com

I'm suprised you've been using the Delta in n-Track under Win2K without using the ASIO drivers. Doesn't really work for me at all. Plus you're limited to a stereo pair and I think output is truncated to 16 bit or something weird like that (been a while since I was in your shoes) With the ASIO drivers, it works very well IMHO.

Nix that, the latest Delta drivers were released just six days ago!
