ASIO and CPU

When I swiched from win98 to win2K, I also switched to ASIO drivers. Suddenly, my plugins began chomping much more CPU. Is this because of W2K, or because of the ASIO drivers? If it is because of the ASIO drivers, is it just the particular drivers for my sound card (delta1010), or is it a factor of all ASIO drivers? Or maybe it has something to do with my audio software (ntrack). Anyone out there using ASIO?
 
Did nobody experience a similar problem? I'm using ntrack - maybe that's the problem.
